Waymo Launches Clever, Cute, Creative Marketing Campaign with Fortune Cookies

Waymo has been expanding quite a bit in the past year, and now it’s looking to drum up a lot more business with a clever, cute, creative new marketing campaign. In San Francisco, Waymo has slipped little ads into fortune cookies at dozens of Chinese restaurants.

The ads include the slogan “The future is here” (similar to the CleanTechnica slogan “The future is now”). As you can see in the picture above, there’s also a QR code to take you to the Waymo One app — where you can start booking robotaxi rides. It seems like this could be a great way to get more people to download the app and use the service who are still just using Uber/Lyft or — the horrors — normal taxis!

What this tells me is that, as Waymo has been ramping up, it needs some help now finding more customers.

As far as we’re aware, Waymo hasn’t tried out this new guerrilla marketing campaign in the other cities where it operates — Austin, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Maybe soon? Or maybe they’ll try something else there?

“And that future-is-here theme is actually the throughline of a larger campaign of outdoor and social-media ads in multiple markets touting a driverless future that has, in fact, arrived—where rush hour becomes a time to relax or prepare for a date or even practice the French horn while your Waymo takes you wherever you’re going,” Fast Company writes.

Waymo also just signed an agreement with Hyundai to use its IONIQ 5 electric cars for robotaxi services, and also has Zeekr electric vehicles waiting in the wings. Waymo recently expanded in New York. And it unveiled a cheaper new Waymo Driver robotaxi platform that can operate well in various weather conditions. Furthermore, Waymo recently doubled its robotaxi trips in just 3 months. Things are happening in Waymo world.
