FLO’s Rugged X5 EV Charger

Searching for a high quality EV charger for your home or small business? There are many to choose from today at all different price points. One of the best is the X5 smart charger from FLO. Rated for 240 volts, this 30 amp unit will charge five times faster than a Level 1 device, which means it can charge most electric cars in about eight hours. At $995, it is one of the most expensive available. Is it worth the money? Considering its impressive specs, it may be a bargain at that price.

The Specs

The exterior of the FLO X5 is constructed from solid aluminum that is a full 3 millimeters thick for superior durability and protection from the elements as well as falling bicycles an other mishaps that can occur in the family garage from time to time. Chargers that use plastic construction can deteriorate over time, especially when exposed to harsh outdoor conditions. The FLO X5 comes with a full 5 year warranty – 2 years longer than most other chargers.

The X5 can be mounted outdoors in the harshest environments and will perform reliably in temperatures as low as -40°F, which is one reason that it is the only home charger sold by Mercedes Benz dealers in Canada. At the other extreme, the X5 works as intended at temperatures as high as 122°F. It’s sleek, modern design will complement any home. It will look good near your exciting new EV, too!

It comes with a 25 foot long commercial grade charging cord that stands up to all weather and temperature extremes. The extra long cord allows you to place your X5 in the most convenient location and still be able to reach the charging port of any car whether parked inside or outside your garage. The charging connector is designed to work with any electric car sold in North America.

The FLO X5 meets all CSA and UL specifications. With its built-in security features, it is designed to protect your vehicle and your home against fluctuations in the power grid with built-in security features. Connecting it to your home’s electrical service is a job that most electricians can handle easily.

A Fully Connected Charger

The FLO X5 features an advanced app based user interface that allows you schedule your charging sessions to take advantage of the lowest available rates for electricity in your area, saving you money for years to come. From your smartphone, you can check your charging history, lock your charger or being charging remotely, manage demand response parameters or adjust the power delivery to your vehicle.

FLO provides over the air updates to the X5 EV charger to keep in compatible with all electric car models, whether from companies making them today or new companies that will bring additional models to market in the future. Those updates are a free service provided to all FLO X5 customers.

Additional Features

The FLO X5 EV charger has a dynamic power sharing feature that allows two units to be serviced by one breaker. For customers with two (or more) electric vehicles, this eliminates the need for an expensive electrical panel upgrade.

The charger also qualifies for all state, local, and federal rebate and incentive programs, which may reduce the total cost of purchasing and installing the charging equipment.

Made In North America

All FLO EV chargers are manufactured in North America. The company has just announced a $3 million investment in a new factory in Auburn Hills, Michigan, which will add 133 new career opportunities to the local economy. The company has an award winning customer service operation to assist customers at any time with questions or concerns they may have.

Still not convinced? Keep in mind that FLO is one of the largest public charging networks in North America with tens of thousands of satisfied customers. Here is a review of the FLO X5 by a verified customer.

After exhaustive research I bought [the X5 EV charger] about 15 months ago for my Chevrolet Bolt EV and had an electrician install it. Without a doubt this is probably the most expensive charger on the market but it’s worth every dime. The old saying “you get what you pay” for is very true in this instance.

The housing is solid, very heavy cast aluminum, therefore virtually indestructible and not subject to corrosion. The cord is top quality and remains flexible and safe from -40°C to +50°C, also the unit remains operating at these temperatures reliably, and as a Canadian this is extremely important.

The data connectivity was super easy to set up and works very well allowing me to control all aspects of my charging experience. This unit is also fully certified for use outdoors. FLO backs their unit to the hilt and can service it as well, in a timely manner. Check out the competition lots of plastic parts and not at all suited for extreme weather conditions, and little to no service available. Choose wisely and you won’t go wrong.
