I don’t have a ton to write about this, but the visualization below is a must see. Mase Goslin had some free time on his hands, pulled 2012–2019 US EV sales data from InsideEVs, and created the following visualization with the data:

Updated visualization by brand (not model):
Some have been requesting this by brand instead of by model. Also sped up the animation. #TSLA #Tesla @Tesla @elonmusk @InsideEVs pic.twitter.com/EvajCWMLQw

The whole visualization is fun to watch, especially as someone who has covered the electric vehicle market professionally since 2012 or so, but there’s clearly a special 13 seconds at the end of the visualization when a certain bar on the charts starts rising rapidly. It looks like Super Mario jumping over a bunch of mushrooms or something.
Of course, seeing this chart updated in a year or so will be a ton of fun as well — the Tesla Model 3 bar will grow like bamboo. On the other hand, once of the great things about the early years was the neck-and-neck competition between the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt on the sales charts. There is no such fun right now and it’s quite depressing to see how much smaller non–Model 3 sales are. I guess we can count on a competition like that returning once the Tesla Model Y is on the market and production ramps up. Will it ever catch the Model 3 in cumulative US sales? If so, how long will it take.
Give a thanks to Mase Goslin for creating this fun visualization by retweeting his tweet here.
