Tesla Board Of Directors — Independent Candidate Ideas

Tesla is looking for two new independent directors. There are many very capable candidates outside the normal business circles. We want candidates that will stay true to Tesla’s mission, and can even protect Musk from market pressures by keeping an eye on the future.

They also should be able to open doors to Tesla that are outside the current director’s networks. Here are some names that I think should be considered.

Jennifer Granholm, Governor of Michigan from 1/1/2003–12/31/2010, professor of law and public policy at UC Berkeley, senior research fellow at the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute, project scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Dieter Zetsche, retiring CEO of Daimler. He rescued Tesla in 2009 with a capital injection and an order for Smart ED drivetrains.

Cecille Richards, former President of Planned Parenthood. Roots in the Democratic Party and as labor organizer.

Robert Reich is a former Labor secretary from the Clinton administration. He teaches on the subjects of Law, Public Policy, and the economy at UC Berkeley.

Or, with an environmental angle, someone from the following organizations would make great additions, like:

  • Sierra Club: Michael Brune, executive director.
  • Union of Concerned Scientists: Anne R. Kapuscinski, chair.
  • Greenpeace: Has a broad bench of highly qualified people.

These are all people who could contribute to Tesla and open doors. Additionally, they would be more focused on the long-term future than next quarter’s profits. Nobody has to tell them that the environment is important.

I am sure to see a host of very capable names pop up in the comments.

Grumpy old man. The best thing I did with my life was raising two kids. Only finished primary education, but when you don’t go to school, you have lots of time to read. I switched from accounting to software development and ended my career as system integrator and architect. My 2007 boss got two electric Lotus Elise cars to show policymakers the future direction of energy and transportation. And I have been looking to replace my diesel cars with electric vehicles ever since. At the end of 2019 I succeeded, I replaced my Twingo diesel for a Zoe fully electric.
