Göteborg Energi Orders Two 450 kW ABB Electric Bus Fast-Chargers

ABB, an electric vehicle charging solutions giant (amongst a great many other things), has received an order for two 450 kW OppCharge fast-charging stations from Göteborg Energi and its partners Volvo Buses and Västtrafik, according to recent reports.

The news means that Gothenburg’s articulated high-capacity electric buses will soon have access to the state-of-the-art ABB 450 kW fast-charging stations — which will be installed at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and at Eriksberg Square.

The two new electric bus fast-charging stations are slated to be installed in the Swedish city in spring 2018 and will serve line 16 of the city’s transit bus system — where Volvo Buses’ prototype electric articulated high-capacity buses will be operating.

The CEO of Göteborg Energi, Lotta Brändström, commented on the news: “We are committed to providing charging solutions for Gothenburg, whether that is for EV passenger cars or for the city’s public transport network. The transition of the transport sector is one of our biggest challenges and we understand that this will take the combination of many different solutions.”

A press release on the matter provides more: “The chargers are part of the ABB Ability portfolio of digital solutions where cloud connectivity allows for remote diagnosis and management, ensuring reliable and efficient infrastructure for bus passengers.”

ABB has provided charging solutions as part of its drive to promote sustainable mobility since 2010 and has sold more than 6,000 cloud-connected DC fast-chargers around the world for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. … OppCharge is an open interface for the automated charging of both single and double deck electric buses, which can be utilized by any manufacturer, using a pantograph on the infrastructure to connect the bus to the charging point.”

To date, ABB has installed OppCharge systems all around the world — with installations over just the last year in Sweden, the UK, Canada, Belgium, France, and Luxembourg.
