New York Governor Launches $70 Million Electric Car Rebate & Outreach Initiative

The governor of New York State, Andrew M Cuomo, recently launched a new $70 million electric vehicle rebate and outreach program, intended to support and spur the adoption of the technology and thereby reduce regional air pollution.
The new electric vehicle rebates are reportedly available to all state residents who buy eligible vehicles through new car dealers — ones that choose to participate in the incentives program, that is.
“Reducing vehicle emissions is a critical part of this administration’s efforts to fight climate change and reduce New York’s carbon footprint,” Governor Cuomo was quoted as saying. “These highly-anticipated rebates will make electric vehicles more affordable and accessible and support this state’s nation-leading efforts to build a cleaner, greener New York for generations to come.”
Of the $70 million mentioned above, $55 million of the Drive Clean Initiative funds will be used to provide rebates of up to $2,000 forwards the purchase of electric cars, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
The other $15 million will be used to “support improving consumer awareness of electric cars and their many benefits, installing more charging stations across the state, developing and demonstrating new electric car-enabling technologies, and other efforts to put more electric cars on New York’s roadways.”
The press release provides more: “The initiative will be managed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and will help the state achieve its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030. More than 30 different types of electric cars are available under the Drive Clean Rebate initiative.”
The new program is part of the state’s effort to reduce its greenhouse gas footprint and also reduce regional air pollution.
