Yingli Americas, a wholly owned subsidiary of Yingli Solar, and Picasolar have been awarded a US Department of Energy SunShot award to support the beginning of pilot production with Picasolar’s innovative Hydrogen Super Emitter.
Picasolar’s Hydrogen Super Emitter (HSE) process allows for the reduction of the amount of silver needed during solar cell production, while also enabling higher efficiency. Third-party verifications of lab demonstrations have confirmed that the process allows for absolute efficiency improvements of more than 1%, and the elimination of 15% of silver grid lines.
“Yingli is committed to delivering the highest performance modules at the best cost for consumers. Continued development of advanced solar cell technologies is a big part of achieving this goal,” commented Sergiu Pop, Director of Strategic R&D for Yingli Americas. “Successfully completing this project will result in additional competitive advantages for Yingli and we are very excited to be working with Picasolar.”
Pilot demonstration is expected to begin sometime in 2017.
Yingli will be providing the manufacturing expertise for the pilot, and Picasolar will of course be providing its proprietary technologies.
As some background, the US Department of Energy SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national effort intended to spur the development of commercially cost-competitive solar energy technologies by the end of the decade.
