Yale Sustainability Leadership Forum Returns For Second Year
Sustainability professionals from across the United States and abroad will gather at Yale this September for three days to learn from experts in the field and from each other at the second annual Yale Sustainability Leadership Forum.*
The Forum, which focuses specifically on the megatrends distinguishing sustainability from its 20th century precursors, is returning September 13–15 after a successful inaugural year in 2016. Team-taught, the Forum is organized around modules that each provide in-depth topical study and bring together a diverse set of thought leaders, industry practitioners, policy experts, and scholars working on the leading edge of sustainability.
The Forum’s director is Daniel C. Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, Director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy (YCELP), and former Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. He says, “The Forum offers an unmatched opportunity for those wanting or needing to stay abreast of the major changes in environmental thinking in recent years. Last year’s participants — from government, business, law firms, academic positions, non-governmental organizations, media and public relations firms from across the United States and around the world — all remarked on the depth and breadth of the Forum and the cutting-edge concepts and tools to which they were exposed. With top Yale faculty leading the discussions, the Forum provides unsurpassed insight on the sustainability imperative that has emerged across society.”
The Forum is modeled directly on Professor Esty’s course, “Sustainability: Environment, Energy, and the Economy in the 21st Century,” and builds on the vision of YCELP to incorporate fresh thinking and analytically rigorous decision making into environmental law and policy.
Participants from the 2016 program praised the quality of the candid discussions and said they left Yale with numerous ideas for innovating and improving their work. “The Forum, as a whole, was incredibly life changing … it allowed me to ‘connect the dots’ on a variety of factors that affect the work that I do on a daily basis within my role at work and how I view myself as a global citizen. I gained remarkable insight on how to articulate some of those issues within my work as a civic leader to affect local policies on the environmental practices within the communities that I serve,” said Tameka Pierre-Louis of the Queens Public Library.
