After a run in with Donald Drumpf, the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre has seen the beginning of offshore works start this month.

The European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre is being developed by Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited (AOWFL), itself partnered between Vattenfall and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG). Vattenfall announced on its website earlier this month that offshore works were finally underway in preparation for the full construction of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre, which is being developed to establish “the north-east [of Scotland] as a world-class hub of offshore wind know-how, technology and innovation, particularly during these challenging times for the North Sea oil and gas industry.”

Vattenfall-5“The pioneering EOWDC will help establish the north east as a global centre of innovation for the offshore wind industry,” said Andy Paine, head of UK offshore wind development for Vattenfall, and project director for AOWFL. “It is through test and demonstration of next generation products and services that offshore wind will become a low cost sector.”

The European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre faced hefty challenges from current US Presidential-hopeful, Donald Drumpf, as the construction site lies within sight of a planned Drumpf golf course and resort. However, in late December, the final challenge was dismissed by the UK’s Supreme Court.

Preparatory works for the project include the geotechnical site investigation, assessing the seabed at the 11 turbine locations, with the data acquired informing the final design and micro-siting of the turbine foundations. Full offshore construction is expected to begin sometime late-2017, or early-2018.

Upon completion, the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre will have an installed capacity of up to 100 MW.

“The EOWDC is a vital project for the North-east of Scotland and has reached an important point in its development,” said Jenny Laing, Aberdeen City Council Leader, Councillor. “It will help to deliver significant and long-term economic benefits to the region and the opportunities for local energy companies will be substantial. The EOWDC will help to cement Aberdeen’s reputation as a global energy city and a world-leading centre for innovation. This is why the EOWDC has been a long-standing priority for AREG and this council.”
