Campaigning organization Friends of the Earth Scotland has launched Fossil Free Scotland, a new campaign to end the use of fossil fuels.

The new campaign was launched in Paris on Friday during the final days of the United Nations climate negotiations, with a tagline to ensure “A just transition to a 100% renewable, nuclear-free, zero-fossil-fuel Scotland.” The campaigns aims are to “fighting dirty energy … promoting renewable energy” and “moving the money” away from fossil fuels and into community renewables, social housing, and local sustainable transport schemes.

Fossil Free Scotland’s webpage opens with these chilling words:

“World governments are about to fail us in Paris. We know the deal signed at the climate conference will not be enough to protect the most vulnerable people and wildlife from disastrous climate change.  There is no more time to waste: with groups across Europe we are working to win the fights that must be won to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.”

The campaign is setting up to make current moratoria on fracking and unconventional fossil fuels into permanent bans, as well as committing to press local governments into supporting renewable energy.

“The Fossil Free Scotland Campaign will oppose dirty energy, promote clean energy and work to get billions of public pension money out of the likes of BP and Shell and into socially-useful projects here in Scotland,” said Dr Richard Dixon, Director of Friends of the Earth Scotland. “This is the biggest and hardest thing we have ever taken on but it is also the most important.”

“Our vision is of a just transition to a 100% renewable, no nuclear, super-efficient, zero-fossil-fuel Scotland,” Dr Dixon continued. “Despite being an oil producer, our country has the renewable energy assets and the engineering skills to be a leader in ditching fossil fuels.”
