DONG Energy, in collaboration with partners the LEGO Group and William Demant, celebrated the inauguration of the Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm in Germany.
The 312 MW wind farm is Danish wind energy giant DONG Energy’s first offshore wind farm installed in Germany. With 78 4.0 MW wind turbines, producing the equivalent electricity to supply 320,000 Germany households annually, the Borkum Riffgrund 1 went from idea to reality in a relatively short amount of time — with final investment in 2011, construction beginning in August 2013, and completion in October 2015.
“The first offshore wind farm installed by DONG Energy in Germany is a great success,” said Uwe Beckmeyer, Germany’s Federal Minister of Economy & Energy, State Secretary, and Deputy Minister. “Borkum Riffgrund 1 is an impressive example of just how fast offshore installations can now be installed. This translates into lower costs and is good news for consumers.”
“Borkum Riffgrund 1 is our first operational project in Germany and I’m very satisfied with the fact that we can now harvest the fruits of the investment we have put into this project,” said Thomas Thune Andersen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of DONG Energy A/S. “I’m also very pleased with the confidence that our joint venture partners have shown us by investing in this project.”
“Our journey in Germany is far from over. We are currently building another two offshore wind projects and have a number of other projects in our pipeline that will allow us to demonstrate the skills and competences we have gained and will allow us to continue to show the trust we have in the German offshore wind market.”
One of these projects DONG Energy is currently involved with is the 330 MW German Gode Wind 1 offshore wind construction project. Last month, DONG Energy announced that it had divested 50% of its stake in the project to Global Infrastructure Partners, a leading global and independent private equity infrastructure investment fund.
“I’m delighted about this partnership and it is a great pleasure to welcome GIP as a partner of DONG Energy,” said Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President of DONG Energy Wind Power. “I am also very excited about the evolution of DONG Energy’s market leading partnership model to facilitate this innovative long term investment by German institutional investors into the offshore wind sector for the first time.”
