RES Americas Developing 40 MW Of Energy Storage Systems In Illinois

40 MW of new grid-scale energy storage projects are currently in development just outside of Chicago via Renewable Energy Systems Americas (RES Americas), as per recent reports. Once competed, these will be some of the largest commercial energy storage projects on the continent.
The battery storage modules (based on lithium-iron phosphate batteries) to be used in the projects are to be supplied by BYD America. Construction is currently set to begin this winter, and to be completed by August 2015.
The roughly 40 MW of new capacity will be split between two 19.8 MW storage systems — each of which will possess the ability to store about 7.8 MW hours of energy. The two projects, the Elwood Energy Storage Center and the Jake Energy Storage Center, will be located in West Chicago and the city of Joliet, respectively.
According to RES Americas, the projects will be operational and in service for at least a decade. While RES is the one now developing the projects, they were originally being developed by Glidepath Power, before changing hands.
“The Jake and Elwood Energy Storage Centers represent commercial installations of cutting-edge energy storage technology,” stated Victor Babbitt, the company’s vice president of Energy Storage, adding that the improvements to the region’s grid could very well attract businesses to the area.
The projects will consist of 22 energy storage modular units — 11 per each project. Each of these units will be a self-contained energy storage system possessing thousands of individual battery cells, conditioning equipment, and safety and monitoring systems.
RES Americas is reportedly developing the energy storage control and dispatch systems itself.
