EVS27

I’m on a plane to Barcelona as I write this, headed to my favorite large city for EVS27, the 27th edition of a world-leading electric vehicle symposium, as well as a little bit of free time (I hope).

The International Energy Agency (IEA) ranks Barcelona at the 7th-best electric vehicle (EV) city in the world, with the ranking based on how much the cities promote electric vehicle adoption. I’m super excited to be attending EVS27 and learning much more about Barcelona’s EV leadership. And I hope to create a lot of exclusive articles and videos for you in the process.

One initial note worth highlighting is that there are 300 electric vehicles in Barcelona’s public bus fleets, more than any other city. Additionally, the city has more electric motorbikes than almost any other European city, and it has over 260 public EV charging points. On the manufacturing side of things, Nissan’s e-NV200, a 100% electric van, is being produced in the city. The e-NV200 will be used in Barcelona’s and NYC’s EV taxi fleets.

Before EVS27 even gets started, another major EV event will also be stimulating excitement and EV market expansion around the world. The Barcelona City Council writes:

Prior to this major meeting, Barcelona will welcome, on 16 and 17 November, the 3rd edition of EXPOelèctric Fórmula-e, the largest electric vehicle trials in Southern Europe aimed at both the professional sector and the public. Its most visible activity is the EV Large Scale Demonstration, a demonstration that is ground-breaking in Europe of what a 100% electric city would be like, with noise, air quality and heat emission comparisons.

To learn more about Barcelona’s EV leadership, as well as the EV leadership of other top cities, check out the IEA’s EV City Casebook 2012.

Aside from its EV leadership, Barcelona is also one of the best cities in the world for bicycling. Check out this bike photo tour of the city that I put together a few years ago for more on that.
