Xcel Sets 60% Wind Energy Record In Colorado

In Colorado, Xcel Energy earlier this year set a new record, generating 60.5% of its electricity using the wind, up from its previous 56.7% record. This took place between 1 AM and 2 AM (local time) on a Friday — not a surprising time, as wind turbines often generate more electricity at night.

At the time, the wind farms generated 1,874 MW of the total 3,100 MW load (power demand from Xcel’s generator network).

Xcel isn’t done yet — it intends to increase its wind power generation by 30% via power purchase agreements (PPAs) and the purchase of a wind farm in Colorado.
