Nest has announced that it is upgrading its flagship Nest Learning Thermostat with a 3rd generation version of the pioneering home energy management tool.

The new Nest Learning Thermostat will feature a sleek new design with a 40% larger, brighter, and higher-resolution screen, with new graphics so that you’ll be able to see it from further away, and a slimmer profile so it will fit flush against your wall.

Nest Learning Thermostat will also come with a feature called Farsight, which makes use of the new upgraded graphics. Previously, it required a user to be in relatively close proximity to wake the Nest Learning Thermostat up and turn on the display, however, Farsight takes advantage of the new graphics to display target temperatures, an analogue or digital clock so you can see it from across the room — or you can simply turn Farsight off.

The 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat will unsurprisingly also work seamlessly with other Nest Products, Nest Protect and Nest Cam. But Nest is also ensuring that your Nest will work well with your furnace as well, introducing Furnace Heads-Up, which will check twice per year for shutoff patterns “that indicate there’s a persistent problem and if so, you’ll get a Heads-Up message in the Nest app and on the thermostat screen, and you’ll also get a notice in your monthly Home Report.” Owners of the 1st and 2nd generation of the Nest Learning Thermostat will get access to Furnace Heads-Up later this year.

“The Nest Learning Thermostat has been proven by 3rd-party researchers to save people, on average, about 10 to 12 percent on their heating bills and about 15 percent on their cooling bills,” said Maxime Veron, Nest’s head of hardware product marketing.

Away Mode

“Millions of Nest homes around the world have saved approximately four billion kilowatt hours of energy compared to what they would have used if they’d left their thermostats at a consistent temperature. And the results are getting noticed – the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat will not only be available at 7,000 retail locations and from 25,000 Nest Pro installers, but through energy and enterprise partners such as Southern Company, Direct Energy, SunEdison, Infinite Energy, Reliant, and ADT – companies committed to helping their customers stay comfortable and save energy by offering the Nest Thermostat at a discount or at no cost.”

It was only in June that Nest revamped their entire line to coincide with the launch of their newest product, the Nest Cam, which is “designed to watch out for your home and family — even when you can’t.”

“At Nest, we always wanted to build more than a thermostat,” said Nest chief executive officer, Tony Fadell, at the time. “Our vision was to create a thoughtful home – a home that takes care of itself and the people in it. Five years later, all the pieces are in place.”
