Husqvarna Showcasing Robotic Solar Hybrid Lawnmower at CES
For those of you itching to take a look at Husqvarna’s Automower, the sleek robotic solar hybrid lawnmower will be exhibited at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this week. The Automower uses solar and battery power, and is completely emissions-free. During daylight, the 12 watt solar panel allows the mower to extend its cutting periods before needing a recharge.
The mower, which is equipped with a 4.4 Ah, 18V NiMH battery, has a maximum working area of 2,220 m2 (0.65 acre). A wire staked beneath grass level around the lawn perimeter keeps the Automower in the mowing area. If the machine bumps into an obstacle, it reverses and heads in a different direction. And if power is low, the Automower returns to its base for recharging.
Husqvarna’s 22 pound mower also features a 4 digit pin lock code and a security alarm in case the neighbors decide they want to swipe it.
The Automower is available now for the low price of $2999.95.

12MW solar panel? I could use this to power my town while its not mowing.
The battery holds a bit over 79 watt hours of power. In full daylight, it would be fully recharged by sunlight in 6600 hours, or about a year and a half. Can you say “hybrid in name only?”
The money is probably better spent on a grid intertie solar system and an electric mower. And how come my post times are always screwed up here? I made my first post about 10am est.

You did your math wrong. A 12 watt panel will recharge a 79 watt hour battery in 6.6 hours. That is fairly reasonable for a mower. If I were designing the system I would almost exclusively use the solar. If you consider the fact that you only need to mow once a week it would be easy for it to charge itself between mowings.
No rain on your parade intended, but: shouldn’t America be planting food in place of lawns this time around? The Trillions on bail-outs are just about out of gas, markets sagging, and the next “Cycle” in our “Cyclic” Economy is soon upon us, and indicators are, we are in for the eventually unavoidable “Greater Depression” very soon! Our Dollar has been “Fiatted’ to worthlessness, soon to fall from “International Currency” status, disabling us from printing a money ladder out of our hole, at the expense of others, as in the past, and we have lost manufacturing to a smarter, faster, harder working, Asia, Our resources all gone, even finding Prozac in some of our drinking water! Mexicans have wars in their streets for who gets to drug our children, and Microsoft does all our thinking for us! OPEC and the Saudis, can make just as much selling oil to Asia, so we have lost “Exclusivity” there, and Oil is rising as we speak, and the all powerful second coming, Obama can’t even get us decent medical care at fair cost! At least this Mower is environmentally friendly, but a similarly powered “Roto-Tiller” will soon be appropriate, if not now, and much appreciated in a gasoline starved America!
That is awesome, more people would mow there own lawn if they owned one of those. However, the $3k price tag is way to much.
