Magnetic Air Car Could Be Ready by 2010

[social_buttons] Last week, I took a trip down to San Jose for West Coast Green, an environmentally-focused conference with an emphasis on sustainable building. One booth stood out from the crowd—Magnetic Air Cars, Inc.. The San Jose-based company claims that it is working on the world’s first fuel-less car (as opposed to the World’s Most Fuel Efficient Car).

The Magnetic Air Car uses three on-board substations to harness compressed air. The resulting airflow is channeled, modulated, and converted to torque that propels the car.

According to company representative Paul Donovan, the car uses a silicon salt battery that has 30% more mass power than a lead acid storage battery and can charge completely within an hour. The 95 percent recyclable battery can also can be used in a temperature range from -40 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius.

Though the Magnetic Air Car has not yet been tested, Donovan hopes to have it ready for production by 2010. The company plans on building its first prototype at Club Auto Sport in San Jose in the near future.

The vehicle draws comparisons to Tata Motors’ 106 mpg air car, but Donovan says that the Tata Motors design uses pistons while the Magnetic Air Car design uses magnetic technology.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any more details available on the Magnetic Air Car at this time. But if the prototype is successful, I’m sure we’ll hear plenty more about this company.

    Imagine going back a few hundred years and having somebody explain to you the combustion engine. Would you believe that it would work and be fully operational a few hundred years later? It is healthy to critique start-ups and businesses when investing, but if you are not looking to invest in something like this, then why waist your time being skeptical and stifling innovation, which you may not have the full context to fully comprehend, with something that may have a prominent and beneficiary future in our economy and society? Something tells me that this company and their team have more stamina and resources then presumed. In fact, there are other similar concepts in design throughout the world being , which means that this vertical application more than likely may have a horizontal market in the future, with revenues exceeding well beyond the current energy markets.

      So far we have 4500 RPM and that spun a 10KVW Generator quite well. The website is by invitation or request only. If you visit the website hoping to hack it and trash it, forget it! After several small failures, related to outside vendors incorrectly building the components as designed, we still jury rigged the system enough to actually spin the generator, for the first time ever, any where! We accomplished this using 60% of the motor running only 20% of the power needed! This got us enough funds to correct these problems. We are correcting them as you read this. When this motor is 100%, watch-out world! Big change is coming!

    I have a similar idea but does not used compressed air, we all know that compressed air can be VERY dangerous so why would you put it in a car, that children ride in? One minor car crash with compressed can be fatal for a lot of people. Contents under pressure regardless of the substance can be very dangerous. I have an idea for a car that makes it uncrashable, runs off itself, and has a VERY strong potential to in the near future, make it so you put in a destination and the car drives itself. If interested and would like to know more feel free to email me.

      It’s likely that fire was discovered at the same time by separate people on opposite parts of the globe, but it depends on the inventor’s influence and strategy to gain recognition if that is the objective. It sounds like that case will be a landslide if you ever have the resources to set that plan into motion. A good thing about common ideas and competition is that it helps validate the idea, so you are helping your competitors by your actions.

      I imagine people like this would behave similarly if inventors like Bill Gates were eager enough to share their ideas with the public prior to his great success and achievements. I suggest that you find your place at the table while you can, and leave when you do not feel that it suits your own needs. We can’t make short term investments, burning fossil fuels, and operating on an economic loss as an economy forever. Eventually we will have to make long term investments with renewable economic returns.

    It sounds like the work of Hedge hogs. Taking part of an idea they did not think up and then spinning it into at some point STOCK, that will probably start out at a dollar and then grow and somewhere along the way they will have to depart or hope to stumble upon something useful in what they have borrowed, in this case the pneumatic car, or electric car. An English Company had a very similar start, pursuite dramatics of something like that actually bought a idea that some screwball had stolen from an American and then launched millions of shares of stock with the connections of the UBS banker who bought into it, finally they did learn enough by reverse engineering other people to grow the company. That is what hedge hogs do, that is what these guys are, they root around and dream up great web pages with glossy stuff and with enough bull crap eventually they will get something to grow but the idea is not about the car, it is only about profit and in this case condos. Nothing wrong with a pneumatic car but it is not as energy efficient as they would have one believe. It takes a lot of energy to compress air into a tank with sufficient volume CFM to go any distance. It will probably evolve into a hybrid if they make it far enough. It almost sounds like an English scam…

    A wind-up car would be more efficient perhaps if the family dog was to charge it over night with a doggie tread mill with the cat on one in front of it. Now that is something I am sure the Geeks would buy into…. No doubt some english hedge hog will read it and there we go again, perpetual motion….

    Green car incubator rolls into San Jose

    SAN JOSE — Magnetic air NASCARs may not be too farfetched if the vision of a handful of San Jose entrepreneurs becomes a reality.

    Club Auto Sport — a specialty car condominium facility for automotive enthusiasts and companies — is launching a green incubator. The Charcot Avenue facility in San Jose has dedicated about 10,000 square feet of its 120,000 square feet to house 13 startups and a conference room for green auto and alternative fuel-related companies.

    The facility was founded by commercial real estate developer Ralph Borelli of Borelli Investment Co. and mechanical contractor John Davis, founder of San Jose ’s Air Systems Inc. Borelli said the concept came about because of startups approaching them.

    “We didn’t so much go looking for them as they came looking for us,” he said.

    Borelli brought on Home 1st Foundation Corp. to operate the incubator after discussions with city of San Jose and Redevelopment Agency officials about the concept. The nonprofit is tasked with helping the startups access resources, grants and funding.

    The first company to be housed in the incubator is Magnetic Air Cars Inc. CEO Jim Vye said the company is working on a fuel-less car and generator, which uses a magnetic motor to manufacture compressed air. The air, when converted to torque, propels the car. The company is seeking $15 million each for its car and generator. It has received about $500,000 in funding to date.

    Vye said the company plans to build the prototype by Earth Day, April 22. It intends to license its technology to generator and auto manufacturers.

    “Clean and green technologies and auto efficiencies are at the front of everyone’s mind. It’s in our best interest to put time, money and effort into this,” Borelli said.

    Look people of this site, there is something we as a people of this planet NEED to realise, there are people that can believe that stuff like this can happen, and there are people who have thier heads so far up thier asses they can’t see the sky when they pull thier heads out every now and then, look people from side B (lets call them the negatives) let people believe what they want, I personally believe in the fact that this tech IS possible, and i think its a wonderful idea, as to why YOU can’t see it, i have no idea but seriously stop it, also twin bros, sorry to hear about this if it indeed true, but lemme say that honestly, both sides here (you 2 and MAC) are using thier own tech, your plans MAY be a foundation idea, but its not neccessarily YOUR design, ok now for the other side (the positives) guys kudos for sticking to what you believe to be true, faith isn’t a strong point in modern times unfortunatly, keep on believing in a better tomorrow guys!     After all, who would believe the perpetual motion claims, the gobbledygook jargon, etc.

    I see three possibilities …

    1) It’s all a big spoof ala onion.com, and they just haven’t gotten around to yelling “FOOLED YOU ALL”!!!!

    2) It’s a scam.

    3) They are deluded people that actually believe.

    Please note that they have not yet built a prototype, and have ZERO test data.

    Please note that not only does this car run without fuel, but Paul in his post about 4 above this says that you can leave your car idling in the driveway, then hook up the cars generator to your house and supply power back to the electric company. Doesn’t this sound just a LITTLE bit too good to be true.

    Well, I guess not if you believe in “zero point energy”, like Paul says in another post.

    Snake oil is too charitable of a term for this stuff.

    I think it is a great idea, as long as the magnetic motor has enough horse power to keep a compressor at constant pressure. I have worked on air over hydraulic motor generator systems and you need a constant 2000 pound air pressure to turn the engine over. Also is the reason for the three stage turbo system to eliminate a accumulator tank as this would add alot of weight to the vehicle and the tank could rupture in an accident? Also the magnetic motor cannot consume alot of amperage otherwise the battery won’t be able to be recharged by the altenator, if that is what your regeneration system will have. Need more info.

It was tough since it’s hard to go against modern physics concerning centrifugal air compressors (turbochargers, superchargers, etc).

    No help from anybody, we worked hard for money and spent it on prototyping (daunting task, with failures!) and now magnetic air cars, which contributed nothing (aka – ZIP!) wants to use our technology and get away with it. Why are they bothering us? Why don’t they bother some college graduate, a phd or somebody who earns 6 figures a year? We are just trying to make the world a better place and get our life together. The last thing we want to deal with are pirates.

    Now I will shed some light on the technology they are trying to use without our consent. What we have built is a low delta t- turbocharger (air compressor). Our objective was to increase the compression ratio of today’s engines from standard 9:1 to 70:1 on 87-octane fuel with no detonation.

    We can see why magnetic air cars want to use our technology for an air car since it is possible with our low delta t- turbocharger. A magnetic motor is not needed. The advantage of our turbo charger is that it has potential to compress air 3-5 times more efficient than adiabatic air compressors.

    An adiabatic process for air compressors is known by the following formula.

    (T2/T1) = (P2/P1)[(g-1)/g]

    By plugging in the pressure ratio and compressor efficiency of a turbocharger one is able to determine the outlet temperature of the compressed air. To determine the power required at steady state, one must use the temperature difference and specific heat of air to get a steady state power requirement.

    For example:

    A T3-50 trim turbocharger at 77 F inlet temp, compressor efficiency of 70%, pr of 2.8 and a mass flow of 25 lbs/min should discharge an outlet temp of 337 F. The power required to do this can be around 44 hp. With technology we believe it will only require 7 hp.

    By plugging in the pressure ratio and compressor efficiency of a turbocharger one is able to determine the outlet temperature of the compressed air. To determine the power required at steady state, one must use the temperature difference and specific heat of air to get a steady state power requirement.

    For example:

    A T3-50 trim turbocharger at 77 F inlet temp, compressor efficiency of 70%, pr of 2.8 and a mass flow of 25 lbs/min should discharge an outlet temp of 337 F. The power required to do this can be around 44 hp. With technology we believe it will only require 7 hp.

Then He (#1) looked at me and asked, Can you make it ramp-up through several stages and make some REALLY HUGE PRESSURE? I felt like a little Kidd who just opened the best, most bad ass, Christmas Present ever imaginable. I quickly thought out the schematic in my head and answered YES!

    I’ll say it again! Thanks to the exposure West Coast Green provided Magnetic Air Cars, we have been contacted by more people of vision, more Inventors of Strange New Technologies that are afraid to go to Negative People and be scorned.     I’ve read the above article, the multiple posts from Paul, and the tiny bit of info at magneticaircars.com. With 99.999% certainty, this is snake oil. All show. Zero go. There are claims of what it does, but zero about how. Zero. You don’t like what I have to say? Then PROVE me wrong. All I have to do is invoke the law of conservation of energy as my proof. That law is batting 1000. Never been disproved. What Paul is saying flies in the face of that law. For centuries people have been trying to bilk other people with free energy machines or perpetual motion machines. 100% have been proven to be fake.

    I’ll be happy to take bets. No, scratch that. EXSTATIC to take bets. Put your money where your mouth is. The site says that this tech will be used in production cars by 2010, or earlier. I’ll be happy to give them till the end of 2010. I can wait that long to retire.

    And, OBTW, the claim of the Tata air car getting 106 MPG is FALSE. The 106 mpg claim is by taking eight gallons of gas plus 3200 cubic feet of air pressurized to 4500 psi. The 106 MPG calculation is ONLY counting the gas (used to heat the compressed air as it is regulated out of the tank (to give it more expansion energy)). Does anyone know how much energy is used to compress 3200 cubic feet of air to 4500 psi? Sorry, I don’t know either, but I know it takes a significant amount of energy to compress air to just a fraction of that psi.

    Anyway, we sourpusses will just continue to be sourpusses until some of this snake oil technology is proven. So get over it.

    The car is only an application. The best application for this new engine would be stationary power. Generators, Water Pumps, desalination plants. Think how wonderful it would be to drain the Hetch Hetchy Valley and still have all the water we need all year round. The mid USA is dry, ten years drought dry, some of those farms have wells but can’t afford the power it would take to use them. We build the motor, we get fresh clean water to everyone, power for all our toys, with no pollution and the day comes when we see an Antique Sunset. Clean the air enough and that is what happens. No crud in the air means a clean sunset. No other colors but bright Gold-Yellow. I’m 52, the men in my family normally don’t live past 48, my Father only made it to 41, I want to live long enough to see that Golden Sunset. then I can die happy because that will mean the Magnetic Air Motor was such a smash hit that its use circum-navigated the planet. If the Chinese, Austrailians and Indians replace Gasoline/Diesel with Magnetic Air on their generators, the whole world will follow suite and the air quality will grow cleaner in a very short time. If every one of those motors were to incorporate water/air filtration, the result will happen that much faster. We could undo all the damage done by the previous generations and make the world that much better for our children and generations to come.

    In the SFBA the average commute is nmore than 200 miles round trip. That equates to $700 to $1,000 a month. There are people losing their homes because they can;t afford it. The Animal Shelters are filling with the pets these people can no longer keep when the are forced to down-grade their living arrangments. Replace Electricty and Gasoline for their cars with self generated power and we are talking about debt relief. You could outfit your larger vehicles with generators on board. Go home from work, let the truck idle in the drvieway, plug it in, your energy bill goes down. You go on vacation to that remote cabin, out in the sticks, you take your power with you. Your Boat becomes the greenest possible toy you can have. Not only does it go through the water, no only does it make all the electricity you need but it does so without polluting. You can charge the battery in the small boat for the trolling motor and go stealth the next day early to Catch fish. Best of all, after you use the Mag Motor long enough, the water purifies and the fish are better for you and their are more of them because they thrive better.

    Negative people are just frustrated people who are desensitized by the lack of passion that surrounds them. A few points to note from what I’ve read here so far: 1, There HAS to be something better than fossil fuels for us to exploit. 2, Its a magnetic car, not electric, not compressed air, magnetic – we can avoid jumping to conclusions if we really try. 3, if you got burned by a scam, it doesn’t mean that anything new out of the box is a scam, because if it were, we wouldn’t even have DC power. 4, We’re going to quibble over the meanings of phrases, because that’s our nature (fuelless car??) but maybe the vehicle charges it’s own battery, so does that make it fuelless to some? Probably, even though they’ll eventually admit that it’s USING fuel, even if the fuel is “free”.

I started building the motor thirty years ago, my problem then was I did not want to have a huge air tank to worry about. That and a Turbo Bearing self destructing, real bad, brought my research to a noisey end. Today we have incredible new materials and prototyping facilities second to none. Today I can do in hours that which took weeks before. West Coast Green did exactly what we hoped it would. It drew out a flurry of new techologies that others have and kept hidden. Computers are good, but NOT the ultimate technology. I have signed NDAs about all these new technology, but I CAN tell you this. The next TEN years will prove to be a whole new paradym shift in transportation technology, energy technologies and the reduction of global warming. Twenty years from now I hope to have lived long enough to see a truly Golden Sunset. A Sunset free of pollution shineing on a planet in full recovery. Mankind must save themselves, take mankind out of the equation and the environment/earth will save itself. Nuff Said, I’ll climb down off the soapbox now!

    My guess is that the battery stores electricity to power a compressor motor that sucks in outside air and stores it as compressed air which is then used to power a mechanical drive train of some sort (not pistons apparently but “magnetic”).

    The battery itself is likely recharged conventionally; partly by recovering some wasted heat from braking as well as plugging it into an outlet.

    As for the magnetic part… could just be referring to a DC motor or possibly some kind of magnetic bearing system that minimizes friction. Maybe even a magnetic induction system that generates electricity to help charge the battery when coasting downhill or something?

    Why are they bothering with compressed air? If the thing runs on a battery anyway, why not just use an electric motor for the primary powerplant? Existing electric motors are very efficient, that’s not the problem with electric cars, its the batteries.

I think most people realized when the article said “fuel-less” that it probably was referring to not using some type of fossil fuel to directly power the vehicle (rolls eyes). It is not helpful to be disengenuous about these things, because knowledge is always better than the alternative, even if it is only partial and preliminary. The facts are not that negative…magnetic power has lots of potential, and once the paradigm of how to motivate a generator via magnetic pressure is discovered, this could have major implications for generating electricity OR torque cheaply. Everything is snake-oil and smoke and mirrors at first, especially when none of us were intelligent enough to participate in experimenting or supporting the research.:) Keep up the good articles, and you should not be expected to spoon-feed your readers information that requires no thoughtful reasoning on their part.

    It’s not like they were asking for money. I question those of you who meet this with full negativity. All types of alternative energy ideas should be explored to get us out of the monopolistic hands of Big Oil. The problems we have today are because Big Oil and the Big Auto Companies were successful at stifling competing technologies, while making us dependent upon theirs. Witness the acquisition and destruction of miles and miles of train tracks in the Los Angeles area years ago. There used to be train tracks that ran from Pasadena to the beach. It would now take billions of dollars to recreate what the Autombile industry destroyed. I have no sympathy for them. They had opportunity to develop 100 mpg cars but instead paid their executives millions of dollars and stayed in bed with Big Oil. They should all go bankrupt – screw’em.

    Over the past 100 years the world has come to depend on oil, the time has come to look for new energy sources. Every new idea is always met with with cutesy remarks or negativity. I wish these guys the best of luck and at least they are not sitting on their butt wishing someone would do something.

    From my understanding, a magnetic motor works by capturing the power of magnets repelling each other. This would not require a liquid cooling system.

    A battery would be required to maintain a steady electrical field, power the lights, radio, cigar lighter/power outlet, and heater.

    I expect this will use composite/fiber tanks to hold air at high pressure. If they are damaged in a wreck, they crack, with a bang, rather than explode.

    I don’t understand why people buy into obvious fakes like these. There are several problems I’m seeing based on the description provided.

    Ignoring the fact that this car is obviously not “fuel-less”:

    1) “… uses three on-board substations to harness compressed air.”

    On-board substations? Substations are building that step-up or step-down the voltage of electricity for powerlines. Substations have nothing to do with “harnessing compressed air”.

    2) “The resulting airflow is channeled, modulated, and converted to torque that propels the car.”

    a) Ok, so they channel the airflow. That at least makes sense. But how and why exactly are they modulating the air? Don’t bother trying to answer that question. To modulate something, outside of the music and art definitions, is approximately thus: “To change a signal in a way that conveys information”. That which provides the raw power to the device does not need to convey *any* information.

    b) “airflow is … converted to torque that propels the car.”

    I really don’t like this statement. Technically speaking, it *can* make sense, but it’s a little too dumbed down – a little too vauge. Combined with the rest of this article, it just smells like snake oil.

    3) “… a silicon salt battery that has 30% more mass power than a lead acid storage battery and can charge completely within an hour.”

    a), I don’t believe that a “silicon salt battery” even exists. Even Google only comes up with 7 results for that phrase, most of them refering to this very “car”.

    b) “30% more mass”. More mass=more work required. What you want isn’t more mass; you want more energy storage per mass unit (which is what newer battery technology is helping with).

    c) “… and can charge completely within an hour.” The only way this is possible (for a battery of the size required for this type of application) is by using charging methods that severely decrease battery life in the long-run.

    4) “but … the Tata Motors design uses pistons while the Magnetic Air Car design uses magnetic technology.”

    Uh… yeah. Sure. How? Air has no magnetic properties. How can “magnetic technology” possibly use air to provide mechanical energy?

    Don’t get me wrong. I want to see alternative engine technologies as much as the next guy. If they can show the science behind this without any vauge or marketing terms or “it just works” type statements, I’ll at least be intrigued. Until then, it’s just vaporware.

    BTW. To those that are saying that car looks cool, it is highly unlikely the picture used in the article is the actual car. The picture is a marketing shot that comes from the car’s website, and just above it is two mid-sized ecconomy cars, a semi truck and an SUV. It’s probably just concept art. Even if it did have that body, a piece of shit in a cool body is still a piece of shit.

    You are correct that there is a ‘fuel’ of some type, there will always be a ‘fuel’ of some type unless the law of energy conservation is somehow violated in the future. This is the biggest problem that people overlook with electric and hydrogen, etc.. (takes electricity to produce through hydrolysis) vehicles. When more than half of the energy in this country is still produced from fossil fuels, we’re better off using gasoline/diesel because there is less energy lost to the end product of moving your car.

I would personally contact the developers and conduct more thorough research if you are interested in this new development, rather then relying on relative news sources.

      You haven’t heard from me for almost three years. The economy slowed the investors efforts but we finally have a fully working generator. You put batteries in it, it runs and recharges the batteries and saves $500 on the energy bill that comes to the shop. It weighs sixty two pounds and is a small prototype! It runs like a motor, lots of torque, lots of power. It will easily power the air compressor in the MagAirCar AND charge batteries for a Hybrid Drive System. The next round of funding will be to build the operational car motor! Then the motor will be placed in a car suitable for Bonneville time trials. When I have something concrete to report, I’ll type again!
