BYD Shoots Up To 10% Of EV Sales In Spain
BYD is clearly leading the electric vehicle market globally, but that’s mostly due to its dominance in China. Outside of China, it has been leading the EV way into numerous neglected, developing markets — in Asia, Africa, and South America. Of course, the Chinese automaker is also selling cars in Europe, but Europe’s got its own huge array of native legacy automakers who top the charts there. So, BYD isn’t really a big name in European countries yet. Oh, well, except in Spain now!
In July, BYD accounted for a full 10% of plugin vehicle sales in Spain. That’s far more share than Tesla has in the country (3.3%). That’s also double BYD’s share of the plugin vehicle market the rest of Europe.
We do have to note that Spain is a little different, though. Whereas other major auto markets in Europe often have their own domestic brands (VW, Mercedes, Audi, and BMW in Germany, for example; Renault, Peugeot, and Citroen in France; Fiat in Italy), there is no standout Spanish automaker that dominates the market and keeps contenders out.
Note that as BYD is looking for locations to expand its manufacturing footprint in Europe, Spain is currently on the shortlist. With 10% of EV sales in the country and the potential to grow that a lot further, one can see how Spain could come out on top. And that’s without even mentioning the climate there!
Also note that BYD offers a lot of models in Spain. This is BYD’s secret sauce, or not-so-secret sauce, and just one of several sauces BYD has in its cupboard. The Chinese automaker has developed a bunch of different models for different tastes and needs. Pictures of some of them from BYD’s website in Spain are above and below, but those aren’t even all of the models.
Look at the various options BYD has on the market in Spain. This is how you lead in EV sales.
Notably, also, BYD has 25 dealers selling its cars in the Mediterranean country in 2024, whereas it now has around 100 dealers selling its cars in España. A fourfold increase in sales locations has to make a big difference.
BYD’s share of Spain’s total, overall auto market is up to 1.8% in 2025, a sixfold increase over the 0.3% of 2024. That’s more than Volvo or Jeep has in the country.
How long until BYD has 10% of the overall auto market in the country?
Note that plugin vehicles accounted for 21% of auto sales in Spain in July, up from around 10% in August 2024. Spain may be behind the faster-moving European auto market as a whole in terms of electrification, but it appears to be growing and developing fast. With an increasing number of affordable electric cars popping up across the market, it’s only natural that people will catch word of these cheap but adequate cars. I assume BYD’s sales have to grow in the country. How high can they go? That’s what we’ll see.
