Geely Philippines Updates Its SUV, Introduces New EV
Last Updated on: 2nd July 2025, 12:32 pm
“This new chapter is about putting the driver first,” Sylva Yu, CEO of Geely Motor Philippines (GMP), declared as she introduced the all-electric Geely EX5 and the hybrid Geely Okavango Elite on June 30th in a simple launch ceremony called “EnerGeely.”
The simultaneous launch underscores Geely’s strategic focus on addressing the evolving needs of Filipino motorists, offering solutions for both urban efficiency and versatile family transport. It is also polishing off a brand image tainted by troubles it had with the Geely Coolray, once the darling of the compact SUV market, hurt by poor after-sales responses and a barrage of social media slurs.
Since July 2024, the operations of Geely in the Philippines have transitioned to Geely Automotive International Corporation (GAIC), which is based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. GAIC directly manages its operations in the country. Back then, GMP President Willy Wan promised to resurrect the brand and introduce a lineup of new energy vehicles. The EX5 EV and Okavango Hybrid seem to be the fulfillment of those promised.
“These are vehicles built for real-world roads and everyday routines,” Yu added, highlighting the brand’s renewed emphasis on consumer-centric offerings, promising vehicles that are not just packed with features but genuinely adapt to the daily lives of Filipinos. “Whether it’s the quiet torque of the EX5 or the hybrid practicality of the Okavango Elite, we’re delivering performance, comfort, and adaptability that Filipino motorists will immediately feel.”
The Geely EX5
Leading Geely’s charge into the fully electric segment is the Geely EX5, an all-electric SUV priced at P1,799,000 (~$32,000) and the first for the brand in the Philippines. Positioned as a “next-generation SUV,” it says that it is built on five pillars it identifies as new energy, safety, comfort, intelligence, and design.
Under the hood, the EX5 boasts Geely’s innovative short blade battery technology, coupled with an 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive system. This advanced setup promises impressive efficiency, with a rapid charging capability that sees the battery jump from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes — a crucial factor for urban dwellers with busy schedules. Its energy efficiency is further optimized through IGBT technology, making it well-suited for the stop-and-go nature of city driving.
Safety remains paramount for Geely, and the EX5’s global credentials are highlighted by its dual 5-star crash ratings from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP. The vehicle’s structural integrity is enhanced by its CTB (cell-to-body) architecture, while a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) provides real-world protection, including features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Lane Keeping Assist.
The cabin is minimalist but spacious and technologically advanced. There are amenities like the front-row massage seats, featuring a large 15.4-inch touchscreen, a 13.8-inch Head-Up Display (HUD), and multi-language voice control. Drivers will also appreciate the 360° panoramic parking and “transparent chassis view” for enhanced maneuverability. Geely calls this the Flyme Auto cockpit, and is part of the “intelligence” pillar.
Design-wise, the EX5 sports modern aesthetics with flush electric door handles, a panoramic sunroof, and an interior made with antibacterial materials, catering to a more wellness-minded driving experience.
Okavango In Hybrid
Joining the EX5 is the refreshed Geely Okavango Elite, a hybrid 7-seat SUV priced at P1,368,000 (~$24,300). Building on the Okavango’s reputation for spaciousness and versatility, the Elite variant refines these characteristics.
Geely insists that it is the “go-to choice for big days and bigger families.”
A standout feature of the Okavango Elite is its seating configuration; it’s the only model in its segment to offer seven fully independent seats. This design allows for unparalleled flexibility, with over five configurable layouts and a cavernous maximum cargo space of 2,050 liters (enough for 20 large suitcases). This adaptability makes it ideal for a wide range of needs, from daily school runs and carpooling to extended family trips or even light business deliveries.
The Elite variant boasts refreshed exterior styling and a more refined interior, enhancing its premium appeal. Safety is also upgraded with a wide-angle 360° camera system and a high-strength steel framework, providing improved protection for occupants. Crucially, its hybrid engine delivers a harmonious blend of performance and efficiency, a significant advantage for a vehicle designed for frequent use.
Slalom
To prove the handling and power of the EX5, Geely conducted a quick gymkhana for members of the media.
The launch of the EX5 and Okavango Elite under Geely Motor Philippines’ direct subsidiary model signifies a more focused and agile approach to the local market. Both vehicles automatically qualify for a green plate under the Philippine EV Incentives Act (Republic Act No. 11697).
This provides owners with significant perks, including exemption from the dreaded number coding scheme and priority in vehicle registration with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), making EV ownership even more appealing.
