Tesla Registers New High-Res Radar Unit With FCC
Tesla has registered a new high-resolution radar unit with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and its Office of Engineering and Technology Authorization and Evaluation Divisions, Drive Tesla Canada has reported.
Although the registration will allow Tesla to sell vehicles that have the units installed in the U.S., the documents don’t reveal how Tesla plans to use these new radar units. They could, Drive Tesla Canada noted, form part of the unreleased Hardware 4.0 (HW 4.0) package.
Tesla driver and hacker @greentheonly pointed out that the new radar units have frequency ranges that are similar compared to the Bosch and Continental units Tesla has used before. The units could be used for imaging similar to how LiDAR maps its surroundings with a laser beam.
