France June 2020 EV Market Share At 9% — Almost 4x The 2019 Result!
France, Europe’s second largest auto market, saw electric vehicle market share climb to 9% in June, a huge jump up from the 2.5% of a year ago.
The result comes as the overall French passenger auto market recovered to historical levels, with electrics taking a record 20,990 of the total 233,820 auto sales.
Of the almost 21,000 electric vehicles sold, around two thirds were full battery electrics (BEVs) and the remaining third were plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
We don’t yet have all the breakdown details on the best selling BEV models in June, though May’s top 5 are now confirmed as: the Renault Zoe, Peugeot e-208, Hyundai Kona EV, Citroen C-zero (largely unchanged since 2009!), and Tesla Model 3. We can expect an approximately similar lineup of BEV favorites in June. Others potentially in the running include the Kia Niro EV, Mini SE, and Peugeot e-2008.
Provisional industry association data from CCFA puts the homegrown pure electric Renault Zoe as June’s best seller, with a massive 6,011 French sales, some 2.6× its recent average monthly volume, taking 44% of all BEV sales.
Overall passenger auto sales in June returned to historical levels, with the almost 244,000 sales actually beating out June 2019’s result by 1.2%. Whether this represents a boost from rebound sales from pent-up demand during the recent lockdown or the rest of the year continues to track close to historical levels remains to be seen.
What’s certain is that EV market share will continue to enjoy its breakout year in France, in part thanks to recently renewed incentives, with at least 10% EV market share as a full year result now looking like a strong probability, up four times from 2019’s 2.5% result.
Meanwhile, other European markets are seeing similar breakout EV growth in 2020 — stay tuned over the coming days as we report the June results from around the region.
I’ve recently predicted European sales of between 7% and 10% in 2020. Is that now looking too conservative? Let me know.
