Tesla Gigafactory Progress Update (Drone Video)
With the beginning of Tesla Model 3 manufacturing reportedly slated to begin less than a half year from now, the status of Tesla’s manufacturing ramp-up is something to keep a close eye on. Related to this, the status of development at the company’s Gigafactory in Nevada is important to the achievement of the company’s long-term production plans and profitability.
So, how is development on the Tesla + Panasonic Gigafactory going? A new drone-shot video uploaded to YouTube by Matthew Roberts gives us some insight into that.
While it’s hard to get an idea of exact progress, the DJI Phantom 3 drone-shot footage seems to show that things are roughly on schedule. Give it a watch:
It’s certainly a gigantic building, isn’t it?
Once completed, the Tesla + Panasonic Gigafactory is expected to be able to produce around 150 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of lithium-ion batteries a year — which would represent a huge portion of the world’s total lithium-ion battery cell production, and enough production capacity for 1.5 million Tesla electric cars per year.
Longer-term expansion plans will presumably require a fair number of other “Gigafactories” located elsewhere in the world, in addition to the Nevada facility. Tesla is reportedly nearing the point of announcing development plans for a second Gigafactory, and possibly a third as well. The location of this (or these) facilities remains an unknown, though there are clearly a lot of regions, cities, and countries, angling to attract Tesla.
