GRID Alternatives Expanding Into International Markets

The country’s largest non-profit solar installation organization, GRID Alternatives, recently announced that it will be expanding into the international market, via the acquisition of another non-profit, Power to the People.

The expansion will allow GRID Alternatives to bring its off-grid-solar-for-the-poor programs to Latin America, and perhaps beyond as well. The deal is currently pending regulatory approval.

Power to the People is a US-based non-profit that is currently doing work mostly in Nicaragua. GRID Alternatives’ new international program is designed to build on what Power to the People is already doing — working within the “voluntourism” model already being used.

The program will provide opportunities for individual and corporate volunteers to travel to Nicaragua and install solar alongside community members, while raising funds to support the projects.

“Power to the People has built a strong program providing solar electricity to impoverished, off-grid rural communities in Nicaragua,” stated GRID Alternatives CEO and Co-Founder Erica Mackie. “This is an incredible opportunity to bring that work to scale using GRID Alternatives’ international network of industry partners and extensive volunteer base.”
