Boom Supersonic & Dassault Partner To Quicken Fast Airplane Travel
Boom Supersonic Makes Use of Dassault 3D Simulation to Cut Waste
Air travel is a thorny topic. A chunk of atmosphere-coating gases is attributed to aviation. Electrifying airliners is so far not within grasp, but we’re getting closer. While various companies are tackling the electrification of airplanes, Boom Supersonics wants to go above Mach 1 without wasting resources and thus lower its carbon footprint.
Will Boom Supersonic democratize fast airplane travel? It’s hard to say at this stage, but the supersonic airplane maker does want New Zealand to be as accessible as New York. Boom Supersonic decided to get to the gist of the problem and ax out the infamous sonic boom that plagued the Concorde and other airplanes aimed at the same target.
With an estimated New York to London flight in 3 hours versus 7, and a San Francisco to Tokyo in 5 hours instead of 11, this is an alluring prospect for many flyers. In fact, Boom Supersonic feels there are zero scientific barriers to supersonic flight these days. Aerodynamic design and advances in carbon fiber along with the more modern triple-fan engines make supersonic aircraft a lot more efficient and economical than the Concorde ever was. But is it green?
The Boom Supersonic jet aims to carry anywhere from 65 to 75 seats at Mach 2.2 (1,675 mph, ~2,700 km/h) cruising at 60,000 ft altitude. The team will test a prototype called the XB-1 Demonstrator. It will be a two-seat prototype that can reach Mach 2.2, according to a press release from Dassault Systèmes. It is being used to test and demonstrate the ability of the craft to fly that fast as well as to develop supersonic airplane technology as efficiently and cleanly as possible.
Boom Supersonic chose to work with Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, seeing it as perfect for the conceptual design phase, all the way up to manufacturing. No after-fuel burner is needed here. Boom Supersonic is using Dassault Systèmes’ “Reinvent the Sky” solution on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, helping to put the startup on a fast path forward with design, testing, and implementation without burning fuel or live testing.
