BMW has introduced a new electric bike that seems pretty interesting … for those who can afford it anyways, as the MSRP of €3,400 ($4,025) is pretty steep. That said, the 504 Wh battery and 250 W + 90 N·m (66 pound-feet) of torque of the new BMW Active Hybrid e-bike seem to make the model pretty enticing.

The model’s removable 504 Wh battery-pack reportedly provides for a range of up to 100 kilometers (~62 miles) per full-charge — depending of course upon the degree of electric pedal assistance that’s being provided.

Something thats probably of interest to many potential e-bike buyers — and probably particularly to those that shop BMW — is the presence of a micro USB socket and Bluetooth functionality for smartphones. Not the most important thing to look for in an e-bike, but probably a strong selling point for some…

Green Car Congress provides more: “The rider can adjust the degree of pedal assistance with ease via the new display; four different power modes (from ECO (+50%) to TURBO (+275%)) can be selected up to a maximum 25 km/h (16 mph).

“The motor and battery are fully integrated into the hydroformed aluminum frame, highlighting the bike’s sporty silhouette. … Saddle maker Selle Royale commissioned BMW Group subsidiary Designworks to develop the first saddle tailored specifically to the requirements of e-bikers. The innovative form of the ‘eZone’ (on sale since September) is based on a zonal concept fine-tuned to the particular attributes of e-bikes and the need profiles of their riders. A short nose, a rising seat surface at the rear and moving side wings create a stable seating position and improve balance when pushing off and braking. They also ensure safety in typical e-bike acceleration situations.”

As noted at that start of the article, those who want to get their hands on one of the new BMW Active Hybrid e-bikes will have to drop a fair chunk of change, €3,400 ($4,025) or so. The model is now available at select BMW dealers reportedly.
