Volkswagen Unveiling Electric Crossover (New ID Concept Car) At Shanghai Auto Show
Volkswagen will be unveiling yet another ID electric concept car at the Shanghai Auto Show, the third to date, according to recent reports. This time, the ID-family concept car will be an all-electric crossover — and it probably stands about as a good a chance of being mass produced as the others do.
For those unfamiliar with the ID family brand, Volkswagen claims that it will be a line of all-electric vehicles featuring competitive ranges.
The new concept car was, as was the case with the earlier ID and ID BUZZ concept cars, designed to function as a fully autonomous car, according to Volkswagen. That’s something that would probably be a necessity (in the segment) if the concept makes it to production in the early 2020s (as has been inferred as a possibility).
Green Car Congress provides more: “The steering wheel retracts electrically into the cockpit where it forms a single unit with the displays and controls that have been implemented fully digitally. The electric vehicle recognizes its surroundings and other road users via laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras. … The concept car is the brand’s first electrically powered crossover utility vehicle (CUV) — a four-door coupé and sport utility vehicle (SUV) in one. … The CUV of the ID family was conceptualized as a sporty, interactively designed zero-emission all-rounder with electric all-wheel drive that is as impressive in the urban environment as it is on the rough terrain covered in an adventurous and active lifestyle.”
The Auto Shanghai 2017 car show begins on April 19 and runs through April 29.
