Vestas Confirms Order Worth Up To 970 MW And $2.5 Billion

Vestas has confirmed industry reports that it has signed on as supplier for an offshore project in the UK which has the potential to be up to 970 MW.

Vestas confirmed the reports on its website, stating that MHI Vestas Offshore Wind had been “appointed preferred supplier for an offshore project.”

Specifically, Navitus Bay Development Limited will receive up to 970 MW worth of the Vestas V164-8.0 turbines, in a contract that Bloomberg New Energy Finance suggests may be worth an estimated £1.6 billion, or $2.5 billion.

The Navitus Bay Wind Farm is a proposed 970 MW wind farm set to be developed off the Dorset and Hampshire coasts, in the southwest of England. The project is a 50-50 joint project between Eneco Wind UK and EDF Energy Renewables, and is set to have its development consent application approved or denied in September.

In addition to this news, the nearby Isle of Wight will manufacture the blades for the project.

“We are determined to maximise the economic benefits of the project across the South Coast so it is fantastic news that the turbine blades for the MHI Vestas turbine will be manufactured on the Isle of Wight,” said Mike Unsworth, Project Director of Navitus Bay. “Its factory in Newport looks set for a great future and Navitus Bay would represent a substantial addition to its order book. This would help to safeguard the 200 jobs being created to supply offshore wind projects in the UK. Having suppliers close to the proposed site will also cut down on transport and builds local expertise which will benefit the project and the region.”
