Watch Top Gear’s Video of Tesla Model 3 Performance Crushing Fossil BMW M3 Around Race Track
Top Gear has released the video accompanying its recent report of a Tesla Model 3 Performance beating a BMW M3 around a race track, which we covered last week. Check out the video here!
The head-to-head race include a quarter-mile run, 0–100–0 mph acceleration-and-braking test, and a lap time of the Thunderhill Raceway track. The Tesla beat out the BMW in all of these categories. The respective lap times around the 2 mile course came in at 1:35:96 for the BMW and 1:34:07 for the Tesla Model 3 Performance.
For fun, they also conducted a “drift” session, and — for consolation — found that the BMW drifts more easily than the Tesla, which is not too surprising given the rear-wheel drive of the BMW and the all-wheel-drive of the Tesla. However, Top Gear also noted (in its original report article) that Tesla is working on a software update to Track Mode to enable more front-rear bias control via “sliders,” which should allow easier drifting in the Model 3 Performance.
“The fact that the Tesla is so quiet and comfortable, and refined, out on the public roads — and — it can do all that stuff on the track, is quite remarkable really. The BMW is much less civilized.”
For more information, check out our recent article on the head-to-head sprint. Better still, check out Top Gear’s own write-up, if you can access the magazine. If you want to see evidence with your own eyes, the Top Gear video is just 12 minutes long and certainly worth a watch.
