To support its milestone news, Cool Effect recently conducted an online Ipsos Poll to better understand the existing outlook on carbon offsets, including misconceptions on average costs, purchasing behaviors, and understanding of an individual’s carbon emissions.
Sometimes the idea of offsets is confusing for consumers. But worse, sometimes it’s misused or people are misled by organizations selling unverified offsets. Cool Effect is one of the few groups that offer ‘carbon done correctly’ by using a triple verification service that ensures that the offsets purchased through its limited project roster has a dedicated and strong impact.
Cool Effects platform is offsets for social good: I’ve written about them here before, should you wish you learn more. On Cool Effect, the price per tonne ranges from as little as $5.27 (with their cool biogas project in China) to $10.98, which means for just about $100, you can offset the yearly average American personal emissions of 17 tonnes per year.
In other fun news, Cool Effect will be returning to the March for Science in D.C. (coming up on April 14) for the second year in a row as the official carbon offset partner for the march.
Highlights of the full report are below:
- 67% (two thirds) of Americans surveyed say that they are familiar with carbon offsetting.
- 77% (over three quarters) of respondents are most likely to believe that it costs $250 or more to offset an individual’s average yearly carbon pollution, with 16% of those believing it would cost over $2,000.
- 62% (over half) of respondents believed that the amount of CO2 emitted by the average American each year was 8 metric tons or less, when in reality, the average is 17 metric tons.
- Though only one in ten have purchased a carbon offset in the past (12%), just over half say that they would be interested in purchasing a carbon offset in the future (51%).
Cool Effect is hopeful – while only 12% of respondents have purchased offsets previously, more than half interested in purchasing a carbon offset in the future shows there is promise in turning the industry around and addressing any historic misconceptions of offsets. If you’re interested in buying of gifting offsets, this is a cool group whose work I really admire. Learn more at CoolEffect.
