Tesla Cybertruck Reservations Go Poof — Now Free Wraps For Q1 Orders
We reported yesterday that Tesla is already rolling out discounts to try to get people to buy a new Tesla Model 3 or Tesla Cybertruck. It seems a bit early in the quarter for Tesla to be doing this, seemingly indicating ongoing or increasing consumer demand challenges after the company’s first year of decreasing sales since the Model S was launched in 2012.
The most notable issue here seems to be Cybertruck demand. The Cybertruck was hyped up as having more than a million reservations. Yet, after around 30,000–40,000 sales, the truck’s reservation list seems to have been wiped out. And, now, Tesla seems to be having trouble drumming up demand for the vehicle. Adding to that narrative or assumption, Tesla emailed Tesla owners like me and presumably people who reserved a truck that you can now get your truck wrapped for free if you order a new Foundation Series Cybertruck by March 31, 2025. Clearly, the aim is to log more Q1 Cybertruck sales ASAP.
Here’s the full text of the email, which had the headline “Get a Free Wrap for Your Cybertruck.”
Whereas wraps from Tesla previously weren’t available outside of some specific areas of California, there don’t seem to be any geographic limitations to this.
Some people are not going to be happy about me covering this, and especially in the way that I am. However, if you care about what’s happening at Tesla, it seems to me that you should like to be notified of and watching out for signs that vehicle sales are not going as hoped or planned. It seems to me that you would not want to block out that Cybertruck demand is not close to where it was expected to be, rather than find that out in a couple months or at the end of the year when the official numbers released by Tesla are a disappointment and a shock.
That’s not to say that’s definitely the case. Perhaps the wrap offer was long in the plans and Tesla is just focusing on trying to land sales of its most expensive, high-margin models. Perhaps it’s all just a bit of fun. But the series of clues we have so far in 2025 are that Tesla is facing some consumer demand challenges, and particularly for its newest model, the Cybertruck.
I’m calling it as a see it, just as I did for BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, and others in the past. Why ignore reality when it is going to prove itself eventually, and perhaps sooner than later?
The good news for anyone who’s a big Cybertruck fan and has been on the line about ordering one: you can now get one wrapped at no extra charge from Tesla, if you are fine paying for a Foundation series model. And, on that note, if you need a Tesla owner’s referral code for a $1,000 discount, you’re free to use mine: https://ts.la/zachary63404 — hopefully you’re replacing a gas-powered pickup truck or SUV with that.
