It seems that the motor show circuit never ends. Motor shows in Frankfurt, New York, LA, Shanghai, Tokyo, and elsewhere fill the year with opportunities to unveil new concept cars. The 43rd Tokyo Motor Show is coming up in late November, and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is using the opportunity to put more toes in the electric vehicle waters. It is supposed to be unveiling two new plug-in hybrid electric concept cars at the show.

Three Mitsubishi Concept Vehicles — Two PHEVs

Here’s more on the two new concept cars (which, to be technical, aren’t cars but SUVs) from Green Car Congress:

[T]he Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV (Grand Cruiser) is a full-size SUV that uses a high output PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) system. The PHEV is equipped with MMC’s S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamic control system for handling, stability and all-terrain capability.

The Concept GC-PHEV is a “connected car” that also offers next-generation preventive safety technology and driver support technology through wireless connectivity.

The second, the Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV ( X (cross) over Runner) is a compact SUV loaded with a lightweight and efficient PHEV system with enhanced environmental performance. Mitsubishi says that the Concept XR-PHEV offers nimble drivability and a body style resembling a sport coupe.

Currently, Mitsubishi only has two electric vehicles on the market, the Mitsubishi i and the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid. The Mitsubishi Outlander is only available for sale in Japan and Europe to start, and it actually ran into some production problems that resulted in production being suspended for about 5 months, just restarting in August. The Outlander is expected to hit the US market sometime in 2014, but nothing is officially set yet.

The Mitsubishi i has been for sale for years, but its sales do not compare to those of the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt.
