Electric Car Options Have Exploded In Number in USA

Many of us have been following the electric vehicle market for several years. We’ve seen the market go from just a few options (and none of them great) to dozens of options today. The electric car options on the market have exploded in number, especially in the past few years. Also, frankly, almost every model on the market today is significantly better than the options 5 years ago, and insanely better than the options 10 years ago! You now get hundreds of miles more range for the same price.

Before I go further, let me note that I’m highlighting the US market here. The European and Chinese markets have exponentially more options. The US EV market looks like a small fish pond compared to the gigantic lakes or seas those markets are. Perhaps we will do a European and/or Chinese edition as well.

Just looking at the US market, though, look at the EV options we have today:

Again, this may not look impressive to our European readers (and certainly no one familiar with the Chinese market), but that’s quite a list compared to even a few years ago here in the US!

Even just going back three years, this would have been the list:

That’s 30 models just three years ago versus 67 models today! That’s more than double the options in just three years. (Note: I may be missing some niche models somewhere, but that’s the model list I have.)

Naturally, if you go back 5 to 10 years, the list gets even shorter and the options are significantly worse.

People who don’t follow the electric vehicle industry closely probably have no clue about this. Even many/most who do follow the industry probably don’t realize how many more options have been added to the market. Also, as Tom Storey noted the other day, “By the fourth quarter of of 2026, there will be 12 new models added to this tally. That means we will be hearing about a new BEV model about every 6 weeks over the next 18 months or so.”

So, we’re going to jump up to around 80 models, from 30 at the beginning of 2022. The electric vehicle market in the United States is finally exploding. Consumer choice is huge. You can look at almost any auto brand now and find an electric option, or several. I look forward to seeing what that means for US EV sales in the next year or two. Of course, beyond having the models, if dealers really worked to get people into these electric cars and SUVs for test drives, that would genuinely make sales blow up. But that’s another barrier to topple. In time, all in time.
