BYD’s newest vehicle is the Denza Z9. It comes in either a full electric (BEV) powertrain or a plugin hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The tri-motor powertrain has a unique feature, but before we get to that, here are some specs regarding the BEV version:
- 0–100 km/h in 3.4 seconds
- length — 5,180 mm
- width — 1,990 mm
- height — 1,500/1,518 mm
- wheelbase — 3,125 mm
- front motor: 230 kW of power, 430 Nm of torque
- rear motors (each): 240 kW of power, 360 Nm of torque
- 100 kWh Blade battery
- 630 km (391 mile) range
- starting price = RMB 354,800 ($48,989), or RMB 384,800 ($53,132)
(Note: The PHEV options have a slightly lower starting price and slightly less power.)
Pretty.
Regarding its special feature, reader Larry Evans provides the details: “That Z9 ($46k) has independent steering of each rear wheel, which helped the S-Class sized car set the record for the world’s fastest moose test (with and without a driver).” Here’s a video highlighting that:
Well done, BYD. Well done. It looks like those 110,000+ R&D engineers are doing their jobs — or at least some of them.
As noted earlier today, a Z9 was logged as BYD’s 10 millionth new energy vehicle. It was delivered to Feng Ji, founder and CEO of Game Science, at the 2024 Guangzhou auto show earlier this week.
