Xpeng Files For IPO On NYSE — Looking Through Xpeng’s History

Xpeng, which I wrote an in-depth piece on just a couple of days ago, has just filed for an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Its SEC Form F-1, filed today, is more than 200 pages long and we’ll be diving into it to see what we can learn. But the short story is that Xpeng has filed for IPO to trade under the symbol “XPEV.” In the meantime….

Who Is Xpeng?

Xpeng, or Xiaopeng Motors, was founded in 2014 — two years after the Tesla Model S came out — in Guangzhou, China. Without a doubt, it took the idea of “copying what Tesla did” to a potentially obsessive level (I’ll come back to that later on).

Xpeng Motors, a popular electric vehicle startup in China that has unabashedly followed Tesla’s lead, that used patents that Tesla opened up for anyone to use, and that designed and developed cars that clearly resemble Teslas (yet do have their own design language) is readying for an IPO in the United States.
