Tidal power on an as-yet unheard of scale is at the center of a hugely ambitious plan to redevelop the energy & transportation infrastructure of the Thames Estuary. The 50-billion pound proposal calls for construction of a new tidal barrier with in-stream tidal power turbines capable of powering some 70,000 homes, as well as construction of a new airport to replace Heathrow and high-speed rail links to ports, the Channel Tunnel and England’s North and Midlands.
Marine power – generating clean, renewable electricity primarily from ocean waves and tidal currents – has been high up on the energy policy and political agenda across the UK, particularly in Scotland. Proposed increases in government investments and subsidies is boosting investment, start-ups and attracting growing interest on the part of multinational energy and engineering companies.
Offshore wind power has yet to get off the ground – or in the water – in the US. That’s despite the tremendous potential offshore wind holds in terms of supplying huge amounts of clean, renewable electricity to highly populated areas all along the US East and West coasts. Conditions are changing, however. Pike Research forecasts that US offshore wind power revenue will grow 56% annually over the next 6 years.
I sometimes think that many of us have a deep seated mania that causes us to believe that for any substance to be an effective source of energy it must be something that can be burned. Not only must it be combustible, the substance must be hard to get. This manic belief requires that the energy source must be searched out and dug up or clawed from the earth at great trouble and expense.
What’s more, to be a credible source the fuel must be retrieved from the bowels of the earth or the deepest depths of the ocean by intrepid explorers with fedoras and a five day growth of manly stubble, all else is considered to be alchemy
