The California carmaker is leading the pack when it comes to battery cost reductions and charging capabilities. It also has set by far the most aggressive goals for selling more EVs in the years ahead.
This new video isn’t the first time Marc Tarpenning has recounted the birth of Tesla (he and his erstwhile partner Martin Eberhard delivered a fascinating account in a speech at Stanford last October), but this is as concise and engaging a version as we’ve seen yet.
It may seem absurd to put Tesla ahead of Big Auto, but by many standards, Tesla seems to be far ahead. You don’t have to take my word for it — Tesla [TSLA] is now the most valuable US car company, recently surpassing GM and Ford in market cap, and there’s a reason or 10 why the investment community on the whole sees Tesla as a more valuable company despite drastically lower annual production/sales output.
This article isn’t about proving that Tesla’s ahead, though. It’s actually a genuine, open-minded search for how long it’ll take Big Auto to catch up to Tesla … if it ever can. One widely held assumption is that large automakers can turn on a dime and crush Tesla at its own game “once the time is right.” That’s not true.
Renowned mutual fund manager and investment icon Ron Baron of Baron Capital is well-known for his conservative, long-term approach to stock picking. He’s been compared to Warren Buffett (both for his investing style and outstanding track record) and has said that Tesla “may be the most interesting” company he’s ever invested in over his 46 year career.
Will there come a day when your Tesla simply pays for itself? According to the Wall Street Journal, that day may be coming soon. “Thanks to ride sharing and the looming introduction of self-driving vehicles, the entire model of car ownership is being upended—and very soon may not look anything like it has for the past century. Drivers, for instance, may no longer be drivers, relying instead on hailing a driverless car on demand, and if they do decide to buy, they will likely share the vehicle—by renting it out to other people when it isn’t in use.”
It often seems that just about every new electric vehicle that is either launched, announced or showcased as a concept car for the future is called a ‘Tesla killer” by the mainstream business and automobile press.
I wish they’d just stop it.
