Volcano Lakes May Contain Vital Lithium Deposits, Say Stanford Researchers

August 18th, 2017 | by Steve Hanley

Lithium is a key component of lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion batteries are a key component of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and electric cars. But until now, it has been in relatively short supply, sparking fierce competition among mining companies. It is one of the most abundant elements in the world, but commercial mining has been limited due to limited demand. A new Stanford study offers some insight into where more lithium can be gathered.
