Silicon Valley-based solar manufacturer SunPower has finally returned to manufacturing in the United States as it announced on Thursday its newly-acquired Hillsboro, Oregon facility is now assembling the company’s high-quality 19% efficient Performance Series solar panel (P19 or P-Series) for US commercial customers.
SunPower, one of the world’s largest solar manufacturers, has announced this week it has completed the acquisition of certain assets belonging to SolarWorld Americas, including its Hillsboro, Oregon, facilities and its workforce of more than 200 employees.
In a move being billed as a “new chapter in American solar panel manufacturing” SunPower, one of the world’s leading solar manufacturers, has announced that it will acquire 100% of SolarWorld Americas, one of the two companies who filed a Section 201 trade case that led to the imposition of 30% tariffs on all imported solar cells and modules into the United States.
You might think the new solar tariffs are about Suniva and SolarWorld Americas, but there’s a lot more going on in the background than meets the eye.
The US International Trade Commission published on Tuesday recommendations for import tariffs on solar PV cells and modules as part of the Section 201 trade case which has been in motion much of this year, and though any tariffs are harmful, the proposals were not as bad as many within the solar industry were fearing.
Suniva and SolarWorld Americas last week submitted updated requests to the US International Trade Commission that suggest lowering their originally-requested tax remedies on imported solar equipment, but SolarWorld further petitioned the ITC to impose a limit on solar module imports into the United States.
