Electric flight is knocking at the door of every aerospace industry. But contrary to land-bound electric vehicles (EV), electric aircraft come in more shapes and forms. Electric air mobility is already getting off the ground, and much more is coming together right now as I write this.
Air mobility is the topic of the day at the Farnborough International Airshow. Rolls-Royce is there too, showing what it has in mind for an air taxi concept using today’s technology.
Adding to the rapidly growing nature of interest in the sector, Rolls-Royce has unveiled and opened a new research and development facility in Finland that is focused on autonomous shipping.
Three of the top aviation engine engineering firms in the world — Airbus, Siemens, and Rolls-Royce — are now collaborating on the development of a hybrid electric aircraft engine, the companies have jointly revealed. The new program — which has been dubbed E-Fan X — comes as competition in the sector to be the first to market with an electrified plane has begun intensifying. The new collaboration aims to fly a demonstrator aircraft in 2020 after ground tests have concluded.
It was reported last week in The Telegraph that ministers in the UK were “ready” to approve the rapid development and testing of a fleet of “mini nuclear reactors” — to be used as baseload capacity and meant to make up for older soon-to-be-decommissioned nuclear facilities.
