After a slip in the previous month, in October, the European passenger plug-in market resumed its growth path (+24% year over year) via some 32,300 registrations, pulling the year-to-date count to over 300,000 deliveries (+34%). The 2018 EV market share grew to 2.3% thanks to a 2.9% share in October.
After a slip in September (-12% year over year), the German plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) passenger car market returned to a growth path, growing 6% in October with 5,292 registrations.
The Netherlands had 2,058 plug-in electric vehicle registrations in October, up 147% year over year (YoY), which translates into a plug-in electric vehicle share of 6.8% in the country. That also pulls the year-to-date count to 17,035 units, with the 2018 plug-in electric vehicle share now growing to 4.3%.
You’re going to be shocked — the electric car respondents most frequently said they were most likely to buy next (or for the first time in the case of non-EV drivers) was the Tesla Model 3. Over 100,000 reservations ($1,000 each) were placed for the car in under 24 hours — even before the car was shown. The demand was through the roof and ended up being the single biggest product reveal in history by certain key metrics. So, it is not a surprise in the least that this electric car tops the list of “expected next EV model.”
The French plug-in electric passenger car market registered 3,888 registrations in October, with all-electric models growing fast (+60%), while plug-in hybrids remained in a post-NEDC hangover (down 2%) — year to date (YTD), though, PHEVs are still jumping 35% year over year (YoY).
Europe’s automotive market is slowly getting charged. The drivers of electrification are EU regulatory agencies, which are imposing ever-stricter limits on carbon and nitrogen oxide pollution. Meanwhile, the German auto industry is pulling in the other direction, using its immense political power to try to delay and water down emissions regulations. The various European countries are caught in the middle — some are embracing the electric future, some are resisting it, and most are muddling through with no particular plan.
