The ugly duckling of electric mobility among Europe’s top car markets is finally turning into a swan. We are talking about Italy, home to so many historic motor brands, where a once almost inexistent EV market is now blossoming into a noteworthy player as Europe pushes towards transport electrification.
After a rough start of the year, the second half of 2020 became a record-fest, with 3 record months in the last 4 months of the year, December being one of them thanks to over half a million registrations.
Norway, the world’s leading nation in the electric vehicle transition, saw 80.7% plugin share in January, significant growth from the 64.4% of a year ago.
France, Europe’s second largest auto market, saw continued healthy growth in electric vehicle market share in January, reaching 11.6% from the breakout 11.0% share in January 2020, and already above the 11.2% annual share in 2020.
If the short historic sales of the Model 3 in Denmark is any indication, we could be looking at a growth of 50% in electric vehicle sales every year for the foreseeable future, which would result in half of all vehicles sold in the country being electric in 6 to 7 years. That’s approaching 100% electric vehicles sales by 2030. There’s no room for linear thinking in the present electric revolution.
While the overall automotive market was still in the red in December (-4% YoY), Europe’s passenger plugin vehicle market had an historic month, having registered a record 281,000 vehicles (+264% YoY!)
A future star lands in a record market (19% share!)
France’s plugin electric vehicle market share hit a new record of 19.2% in December 2020, up 5.6× from December 2019. The full year result was 11.2% plugin share, with local favourite Renault ZOE the year’s top selling plugin once again.
Despite the overall automotive market being in the doghouse, -14% year over year (YoY), Europe’s passenger plugin market is on fire, having score a record 166,000 registrations in November (+198% YoY). That placed last month’s plugin share at 16% share — 8% full electrics (BEV).
November marks yet another fantastic month for the rise of electric mobility in Italy, the fourth largest European car market, as EV sales broke records once again.
