We finally heard about Kitty Hawk’s “secret project,” which sports the strange name of Heaviside. It introduces the notion of range for an electric vertical take-off & landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The demonstration of the aircraft flying is fantastic but I wonder if we’re about to witness another “range anxiety” war between eVTOL manufacturers? Let’s hope not.

I’m always surprised talking about electric vertical take-off & landing (eVTOL) aircraft technology at a party. Most people think electric urban air mobility (eUAM) won’t happen for a decade. Apart from the sad fact I talk about such things at parties, their reaction is puzzling. While most people think eVTOL aircraft won’t happen for a long time, that is a serious underestimation. Many aviation heavy-hitters and startups are already testing them. Heck, you can even buy one now.
The great thing about air events is that airplanes can come from far away. The not so great thing is that if the event is far, you too have to travel to it. But this year’s 2018 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh was well worth the travel, as it attempted to show a clearer picture of our near future mobility.

You just won’t believe who they reached out to in order to discuss the matter.
Last we wrote about Larry Page and his research into the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) Kitty Hawk project, his electric flying bicycle was taking off, virtually. In the meantime, “Cora” is now evolving in the air, this time in New Zealand.
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced this week that the rights to develop offshore wind energy off the coast of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina have been successfully obtained by US renewable energy developer Avangrid Renewables for $9 million.
