New aggregated data from the gurus over at A Better Route Planner show that Tesla Model 3 efficiency is the highest of any production car at highway speeds, with outstandingly low energy consumption. This outstanding efficiency, combined with great supercharging speeds, makes the Model 3 the best road tripping EV in production.
The Tesla Model 3 has now moved into the top sales ranks of all cars in the US, not just EVs, as CleanTechnica director and chief editor Zachary Shahan wrote recently in “Tesla Model 3 — 7th/8th Best Selling Car In USA — Is In A Class Of Its Own.”
This success and sales volume of the Model 3 in comparison to every other electric vehicle available in the US raises the question: What current or future model will be the next high-volume (“hit”) electric vehicle?
Our local Tesla Shuttle arm in Poland has been operating for over a year. One of our co-founders, Tomek Gać, has also had a Nissan LEAF for years and he recently test drove the new Nissan LEAF and the Jaguar I-PACE. We decided to have a long chat about our experiences with the Tesla Model S, some of our experiences with Tesla Shuttle (which is now in operation in Europe and the USA), how the new Nissan LEAF & Jaguar I-PACE compare to Tesla vehicles, and how adequate they may be for “average people” — not just EV fanatics.

Jaguar sold 172,848 cars last year. Tesla sold approximately 100,000, but it was also at the beginning of a steep production ramp. In the second quarter of 2018, Tesla delivered 40,740 cars and had over 10,000 in transit. That would put the company at a production rate of around 200,000 cars a year, already more than Jaguar. However, Tesla was still steeply ramping production of the Model 3, with one foot still in production hell, as CEO Elon Musk put it.
The first three Jaguar I-PACE electric SUVs intended for Waymo’s self driving service has arrived in San Francisco, where they are being used to calibrate the autonomous driving systems and develop a knowledge base of maintenance information. Waymo expects to have 20,000 of them in revenue service by 2020.
Baidu is doing what Apple should have done but didn’t — build a Level 4 autonomous driving platform to sell to vehicle manufacturers. The Chinese company has been developing its self-driving platform called Apollo for the past several years but has no desire to manufacture vehicles. So far, it has 116 clients for Apollo, including Jaguar Land Rover, Valeo, Byton, Leopard Imaging, and Suning Logistcs.
Jaguar Land Rover says it will invest $18 billion in electrified powertrain technologies in the next 3 years. Ford says it will invest $11 billion in 7 years. Which company will still be around in 2025?
The heir apparent, Prince Charles, is reportedly considering adding a new electric car to his stable of alternative fuel vehicles and has narrowed the choices down to just two: a Tesla or Jaguar’s new I-PACE.
