Occupy K St., Wall St. & Main Street, Citizens United and “Republic, Lost”

If the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement is about ridding American politics and government of undue corporate influence – the corruption of the US political process and government by corporate money – then it’s emerging counterpart in Washington, D.C. – the ‘Occupy D.C.’ or ‘Occupy K St.’ campaign – should take a rightful place as a second center around which other campaigns can draw focus and revolve.

Fossil Fuel Subsidies Still Too High

Big oil gets big money from the government – as CleanTechnica readers may remember, $4 billion was awarded to big oil in the form of tax breaks in 2011 alone. Given that subsidies worldwide rose to at least $470 billion worldwide in 2010 – according to International Energy Agency analysts – that is perhaps more surprising than it should be.

Governments Should Subsidize Loop-Based Business Models

Carbon may speed up the growth of trees (in the short-term) but certainly not our economy. For many decades, businesses were only functioning in one direction. This will have to change in the coming years, since such a one-way business focus, known as the river economy, is only focused on production of goods and leaving them in the hands of consumers, who throw them away after their product-life has ended. This will become less profitable in the coming years as the cost of natural resources will increase, resulting in higher development costs.
