The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive month in May, with 2,688 plug-in vehicle registrations — up 193% year over year (YoY). That translated into a PEV share of 7.3% on the broader auto market. The year-to-date (YTD) count is now up to 15,537 units, with the 2019 PEV share at 8.3%, well above the 6% of last year.
Tesla just completed its annual shareholder meeting. Like in meetings past, it was fairly long and covered almost every Tesla topic under the sun. To make it easier for people who couldn’t watch, wouldn’t watch, or simply want to go back to some of the topics in the meeting, below is a timestamped summary from Paul, who kindly stayed up late in Florida (just not as late as me here in Poland) to put this together for the world.
March saw the Chinese plug-in electric vehicle market surpass 110,000 units, up 86% year over year (YoY). Meanwhile, the mainstream market was down 7% in March, allowing the March plug-in vehicle (PEV) share to reach 5.8%. That pulls the PEV market share to 5.1%, which is already well above the 2018 result (4.2%).
The European passenger plug-in vehicle market had a record 60,000 registrations in March, growing 38% compared to the same period last year, a good performance considering the stagnating mainstream market (−4% year over year, or YoY).
The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive sales month in April, with 2,520 plug-in vehicle registrations, up 150% year over year (YoY). That translated as a PEV share of 8% across the overall auto market, pulling the year-to-date (YTD) count to 12,944 units, and keeping the 2019 PEV share at 9% — above last year’s final result.
The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had 4,542 registrations in April, up 43% YoY, with a big portion of this growth coming from pure electric vehicles (BEVs). In total, BEVs scored 3,222 deliveries last month (+70%), with those all-electric cars representing 71% of all plug-in vehicle sales. This growth is even more significant when we realize that the overall vehicle market remained stagnant (+0.4%).
Last month, fully electric vehicles saw their registrations double year over year (YoY), pushing the overall market up +28% despite sales of every other powertrain type dropping at least 20%, which led to record fully electric vehicle (58%) and overall plug-in vehicle (69%) shares. As you already know, Tesla Model 3 deliveries went through the roof in March, with the model achieving 5,315 registrations, a new all-time record for any nameplate in Norway, whatever the fuel source.
The China passenger car association’s first quarter figures are in, and electric vehicle sales continue their rapid rise, up 118% year on year, to over 254,000. Meanwhile, fossil vehicle sales have fallen 13% year on year, to 4,823 thousand for the quarter.
After the December delivery peak, the Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another sales surge last month, with 4,721 plug-in registrations, up 252% year over year (YoY). That translates into a PEV share of 12% in March, and pulls the year-to-date count to 10,424 units (+224%), with the 2019 PEV share now at 9%. If we only consider fully electric vehicles (BEVs), the EV share in March was 10% and in the first quarter was 7.4%.
The big news in February’s top positions was of course the Tesla Model 3 landing with a bang, and jumping right up to the leadership position, but unlike what has happened (and is happening) in the USA, the blackhole effect of the Tesla Model 3 is not absorbing sales from other BEVs (well, maybe the Model S is the exception). Instead, it appears the Model 3 is pulling customers directly from competing PHEVs and gas/diesel models.
