Sales of fossil fuelled vehicles are now on the decline in the world’s three largest auto markets, and being replaced by electric vehicles. Fossil car sales will only decrease from here on out. EVs for the win!
The German plug-in passenger car market was up 17% to 6,767 registrations in January, with a seismic change happening in the fuels mix.

The French plug-in car market took home 4,210 registrations in January — +78% year over year (YoY). Fully electric models jumped 138%, their highest growth rate in over 2 years, while plug-in hybrids remained in the positive as well — +14%.

A year ago, Jim Chanos was a a prominent supposed “expert” on the topic of Tesla [TSLA]. I’ll start out by saying that I’m giving Chanos the benefit of the doubt in this piece and not assuming any nefarious motives. Though, I will summarize a popular theory that disagrees with that assumption as to why he has been so publicly negative about Tesla over the years, and I definitely think the theory could be true.
We’ve published something like a bazillion Tesla sales charts and stats. (See “30 Nasty Charts,” for example.) But this is actually a new one. Jose Pontes of EV Volumes and CleanTechnica has his 2018 tally wrapped up and it puts the Tesla Model 3 in the #1 position globally among all plug-in vehicles.
We have a weird situation. Not that long after GM decided to stop sharing monthly US sales figures, Ford has now followed suit and done the same. This is making monthly market sales report quite challenging. Of course, underneath the GM and Ford brands are Chevrolet, Lincoln, Buick, and Cadillac.
Despite all the media attention focused on Tesla and Elon Musk, it is important to keep in mind what Tesla stands for and why it does what it does. A blog post from 2014 is a good place to start.
