24 Hours With The New, Longer Range 2017 BMW i3 (CleanTechnica Exclusive)

July 20th, 2017 | by Kyle Field

This review summarizes my early learnings in my first day with the new longer range BMW i3. A comprehensive review will follow, but I have found that some of the most important and impactful learnings about a vehicle arise very early on in vehicle use, as that is generally the time in which prospective buyers will make their decisions. My comments include the background of time I've spent with the vast majority of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles available in the United States (including owning at various times the Nissan LEAF, Tesla Model S, and Mercedes B250e)

1st Real Drive With Tesla Autopilot (Including A Few “Warning Shots”)

June 25th, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

I first experienced Tesla Autopilot last year, as I wrote in my Tesla Model X review. It was certainly cool and interesting, and a bit nerve-racking. But that was a short test drive on a California highway — not real use. Well, a few guys and I recently got our first Tesla Model S for an intercity Tesla shuttle service we're launching here in Europe (... called Tesla Shuttle), and the Tesla includes Autopilot

How Does The Chevy Bolt Compare To The Tesla Model 3?

June 11th, 2017 | by Kyle Field

The reality of electric vehicles is that there are many more people who would love to drive an electric vehicle (EV) but aren't doing so today for a number of reasons. Cost and range are the top 2 reasons, with charging being an issue for some buyers as well. The Chevy Bolt was the first mass-produced, widely available, affordable, long-range EV in the US that also happened to offer fast charging. Right on its heels is the Model

Tesla Model 3 vs Lexus ES (& ES Hybrid), Lexus IS, Lexus GS (& GS Hybrid), & Lexus CT Hybrid

June 2nd, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

Following up on the Tesla Model 3 vs Audi A3, Audi A4, Audi A5, Audi S3 fun, let's dive into another lineup of premium-class sedans and hybrids that the Tesla Model 3 will compete against. Doing things a bit differently this time, let's jump into Lexus sales first. Sales of these 4 Lexus models added up to 119,369 in the US in 2016, about 55,000 more than the Audi A3, A4, and A5 combined (74,579). Combining all of these models, we're up to nearly 200,000 premium sedan sales the Tesla Model 3 could steal some serious revenue from

2017 Chevy Bolt Review Part 2 (CleanTechnica Exclusive)

May 26th, 2017 | by Kyle Field

This article serves as a complement to my first review of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt, which was a summary of my takeaways from my first 24 hours with the car. Disclaimer: I didn't sleep in the Bolt, so there's admittedly a gap there in the review process

Hyundai Ioniq PHEV vs. Hyundai Ioniq Electric — Road Trip Comparison (Video)

May 20th, 2017 | by James Ayre

One of the main reasons that many car buyers have been reluctant to buy all-electric vehicles is quite simple — traveling long distances in one is generally quite time consuming and inconvenient. This is mostly owing to the dearth of electric vehicle superfast-charging stations and the low range of many of the offerings out there now

24 Hours With The 2017 Chevy Bolt (CleanTechnica Review)

May 18th, 2017 | by Kyle Field

Many electric vehicle designers felt the need to stand out, to create a design that flies a bold flag to everyone around that proclaims "I'm modern and different!" While this is great for individuals or businesses looking to make a bold proclamation, most people are looking for a car that looks normal, that drives like a normal car with cool features inside that make day-to-day life just a little bit easier

Fiat 500e Review From Biker Chick

February 4th, 2017 | by Susanna Schick

Fiat cut me loose on the streets of LA in a 2016 500e to see if it could be as fun around town as it is on the track. I've driven both manual & automatic 500s, and a broad range of other electric cars. None of them as fun as the Fiat 500e. And it’s not just one biker chick saying this, plenty of car guys agree too.

I Drove A Bolt Today

January 31st, 2017 | by Steve Bakker

Earlier in the month I posted an essay entitled "A Guy walks into a Chevy Dealership" which annotated the experience of contacting a number of California dealers to get a read on how they were responding to the now-in-production Bolt EV. The surprising-to-some result was that, on balance, the second iteration of a pure electric car from GM is being well received

2017 Chevy Volt vs 2015 Nissan Leaf (Test Drive & Comparison )

December 30th, 2016 | by Cynthia Shahan

Before I committed to the Nissan Leaf, I test drove many EVs with Zach, whose boundless energy for fitting as much as humanly possible into one day pushed me to my limit of test driving. Here is my refreshed comparison of a Volt versus a Leaf — specifically, a 2017 Chevy Volt vs 2015 Nissan Leaf

Mercedes B250e Deconstructed In Fully Charged Video Review

December 20th, 2016 | by Kyle Field

The always entertaining Bobby Llewellyn of Fully Charged loves getting into new EVs and taking them out for a spin. This time, he's secured a Mercedes B250e. This is functionally the same car as my wife's Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive, which we have had for 2 years now — it has simply taken on the new B250e moniker to fit more seamlessly into the standard Mercedes naming convention

2016 Ford Focus Electric Review (In Extreme Depth!)

December 1st, 2016 | by Guest Contributor

Don’t be shocked if you didn’t know about it, Ford does not advertise or push that it has an amazing product on its hands. Not all dealers want them, not all dealers can sell them, and they’re made in very limited quantities. For the few of us who have one, we appreciate that Ford has made it, are happy to be driving it, and are saving thousands of dollars in maintenance and fuel costs compared to an internal combustion car
