Top app-based taxi companies Uber and Lyft have been making strong strides toward electrification. And thank goodness! When Lyft and Uber drivers switch to electric cars, they cut pollution 3× more than when a normal driver switches to an electric car.
Since its release, many wondered how the new 40 kWh Nissan LEAF would hold up as the miles racked up. After over 40,000 miles driving mine, I’m starting to get a pretty good idea of how it fares. It’s a great vehicle, with only one serious drawback.
I am a part-time driver for Uber and Lyft and rather new to both. I’m also not a normal driver since I drive an all-electric Nissan LEAF that gets 85 to 100 miles on a full charge around town. All information does not fall out the same in this post as it might for full-time or long-time drivers at both or either company. Earnings ability varies, I suspect quite a bit based on location. It seems obvious that dense metropolitan areas offer more constants and the possibility of higher earnings (but also a higher cost of living). In simple terms, YMMV.
Uber drivers benefit from a vital job that helps many of them to stay above water. Many people are juggling part-time jobs to keep up with bills. Driving for Uber has some of the most valued components for a 2nd or 3rd job. An Uber driver makes all her or his own hours. You can free others from having to driving or owning cars, a worthwhile service to society.
