In 2010, a study by Berkeley Lab using data from NASA estimated that using “cool roof ” techniques on the roofs and pavement of all cities in the northern hemisphere could have a one-time effect of removing more than 44 billion tons of carbon dioxide — 24 billion tons from … [continued]
Energy efficient buildings have a key role to play in decarbonizing the global economy, and a research team from Berkeley Lab is on the trail of a vanadium-based roofing material that can both deflect and absorb heat as needed

Originally published on ThinkProgress. By Ari Phillips. On Tuesday the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a building code update that will require all new and refurbished homes to have cool roofs, which use sunlight-reflecting materials. Los Angeles is the first major city to require such a measure, which was pushed for … [continued]
Green and Cool roofs will save money, reduce emissions, and relieve stress on limited water supplies Installing green roofs and cool roofs in southern California could save consumers more than $211 million in energy bills and reduce emissions equivalent to removing 91,000 cars from the road each year, according … [continued]
One of the essential questions we ask with solar PV installation is “what will the return on the investment (ROI) be?” Many considerations are used to calculate a result. Researchers at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, under the direction of professor for environmental engineering Jan Kleissl, have recently provided us with yet another consideration to incorporate into these equations — the energy efficiency benefit of solar panel shade. Using a thermal infrared camera, they were able to calculate the value of solar panel roof shading.
Goes one further…. If every building had a white roof, we would be able to cool the surrounding areas. That is the reasoning behind a California law about to go into effect next month requiring light reflective roofs on all new buildings. It is already the law for new flat … [continued]
