California Assemblymember Phil Ting (D — San Francisco, District 19) recently introduced AB 1046, which if passed would triple the EV rebate in California from $2500 to $7500. It would also change how the incentive is funded. (Ting has also worked on AB 1424 a bill related to EV charging station access.)

California might be on the leading edge of renewable energy and electric mobility, but sometimes even the Golden State bows to industry pressures and powerful lobby arms. The highly successful access greener drivers get to dedicated high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on California roads are now being pulled away from those greener drivers (drivers of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. EV drivers aren’t being kicked out of the lanes immediately, but the same usual carmaker suspects have apparently been successful in lobbying for anti-EV changes — they only get three years in the lanes.
While the Tesla Model 3’s starting price of $35,000 is in no way “cheap” — not by most people’s standards anyway — there are quite a few incentives on offer in the US that make the cost of purchasing the model much more amenable than appears to be the case at first glance.
